‘Who are those you reach to hold? Do you quiver with their sighs? From land, you trace slivers of living in broad rivers and streams.’ – Singapore River, 1962 by Heng Siok Tan

As the sun rises towards its highest point in the sky, we see Boat Quay dressed to the nines in the finest jewels of the land. In the noonday light, she shines brighter than the other developments on the northern bank, her the title of “Tua Poh” which means “Greater Town” in Hokkien.

It is no wonder they call her the ‘belly of the carp’, a name acquired not only because fortune lives here, but also because of her voluptuous curves where her river arches. To her light, many influential Chinese businessmen have been drawn to set up their trading offices here, including philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. Like many others, he too will soon receive her finest gifts.

In 1960, Anderson Bridge stood as a timeless sentinel over the Singapore River, an emblem of the city's evolving narrative.

The artist’s goal was to not only depict the physical beauty of Anderson Bridge but also to convey the emotions it evoked—a sense of pride, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a nation on the brink of greatness.

Stepping off his twakow (boat), he raises his eyes to the row of ‘godowns’ lining the riverfront like a troop of warriors. These shophouses and warehouses stand tall at the top of the steps that he is now ascending. Behind the façade of their Transitional and Art Deco architectural exteriors, he knows they are filled to the brim with treasures.

Spotting the arrival of the merchant, coolies rush to his side and begin to transport the cargo from his tonkangs. Above, the sky is a canvas of endless blue and the noonday sun continue to blaze – he knows that this is where he will set up his own godown. He is Hoo Ah Kay, although the locals knew him as Whampoa. As he stands here on its banks, he knows in his heart that, for many years to come, this river will continue to flow with her richest blessings.

‘Racks of clothes along racks of clocks, as if ticking away the fashion of the eras.
Fortune telling weight machine, I never stepped on one before.’ - """"Postcards from Chinatown"""", Terence Heng

West of the river bank, the Teochew folk begin to set up their shops alongside their Hokkien-speaking neighbours. Soon enough, they are joined by businessmen, traders, craftsmen, hawkers and peddlers. The journey across the South China Sea has been a long one – and not without turbulence – and the journey ahead will be a longer one still. Each arises from that flowing river with cargo on their backs and a future in their eyes.
