Today, we warmly congratulate rally legend Stig Blomqvist as he celebrates his 80th birthday. 🎂 🥳 🎉
Born in Örebro in 1946, a driving instructor by profession. He began his career with his father Lennart in the co- driver’s seat and immediately showed great promise in his Saab Sport two-stroke. In the late 1960s, he was signed by Saab as a factory driver and achieved his major international breakthrough during the 1971 season, with victories including the Swedish KAK Rally, the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland, and the RAC Rally in the United Kingdom, driving his red Saab V4.
Stig remained loyal to Saab until 1981, when the competition department was shut down. His career then continued with teams such as Talbot and Audi, with its new Quattro. Stig crowned his career by becoming World Rally Champion in 1984 in an Audi Quattro A2.
He became known for his smooth, precise driving style, where Stig behind the wheel lets the car do the work, and where the controlled slide from the previous corner is positioned perfectly for the entry into the next one. No unnecessary wrestling or forcing here. A true master of chassis setup and optimization, he is today highly sought after as a consultant in this field. There is a reason Stig is called “The Master” – or “The Stig.”
Happy Birthday Stig Lennart Blomqvist 🇸🇪!
