The sea is more than a source of food and livelihood. It holds memories, traditions, and stories passed down through generations.

Inspired by the Visayan folk song Si Pilemon, this curated selection of 10 artworks reflects the enduring connection between Filipino communities and the sea, from everyday life along the coast to the cultural traditions that continue to shape our identity.

Through these works, we invite you to see the sea not only as a landscape, but as a part of our shared story.

MANINGNING MICLAT: A LEGACY MADE VISIBLE

For the first time in 30 years, selected works of the late Maningning Miclat are once again made available to the public through a Silent Auction at Art Circle Gallery, UP Diliman, running until October 5, 2026.

The collection brings together works from two significant periods in her artistic journey: the Pen & Ink Series and the Lahar Series.

Created between 1993 and 1996, the Pen & Ink works explore movement, space, nature, and the limitless possibilities of the mind. Meanwhile, the Lahar Series draws from Maningning’s firsthand experience of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, incorporating volcanic ash into her paintings as a way of preserving memory and expressing the human experience of loss and upheaval.

Together, these works offer a rare glimpse into the depth, sensitivity, and distinct visual language of an artist whose legacy continues to resonate today.

Some things are not found all at once.

In Apuhap, a figure emerges from fragments, caught beneath a quiet wash of light. The scattered pieces leave parts of the body unfinished, as if still searching, still finding its way.

There is something tender in that incompleteness—a reminder that sometimes, finding our way means feeling through the pieces one by one.

“Apuhap” is one of the shortlisted works of the 2026 Maningning Miclat Art Competition, featured in Ningning sa Dilim.

Before the night settles, there are still a thousand little things to remember.

Let Me Sing a Song of Lullaby and Goodnight brings together a lively world of colors, shapes, and curious little forms. Busy yet strangely comforting, the work feels like the kind of dream that carries pieces of the day into the quiet of the night.

Twenty layers, patiently built into one finished work.

The Grand Winner of the 2026 Maningning Art Competition, “Puno't Dulo” reflects a process shaped by patience, precision, and intention.
Built layer by layer, the work gradually develops its clean surface, depth, and quiet presence. Each layer contributes to the final image, allowing the details of the piece to emerge with clarity.

And perhaps that is what makes “Puno't Dulo” especially fitting as its title suggests—a reflection on where things begin, what lies beneath, and how every layer becomes part of what eventually takes form.

“Puno't Dulo” is presented as part of the 2026 Maningning Art Competition Shortlisted Exhibition.

Some stories begin in the simplest of places.

In “Mga Kuwento sa Ili,” a quiet scene beneath a humble home becomes a reflection on learning, hope, and the dreams that take shape in a community.

An open book rests beneath the warm glow of a lamp, while a phoenix rises from its pages—bringing together the quiet act of learning and the courage to imagine something beyond what is immediately within reach. There is something deeply familiar in the scene: a young mind finding light in knowledge, and a dream taking flight from the place it calls home.

Part of the 2026 Maningning Art Competition Shortlisted Exhibition, “Mga Kuwento sa Ili” invites us to look closely at the stories, aspirations, and quiet hopes that continue to grow within our communities.

In the middle of a vast and quiet sea, even the smallest light can become a reason to keep moving forward.

In “Balsa sa Laot” a lone figure journeys beneath the moon and stars, guided by a small lamp and the steady movement of a paddle. Surrounded by the stillness of the open sea, the work captures a quiet sense of perseverance—moving forward even when the destination remains unseen.

The lamp becomes a gentle reminder of hope, while the act of rowing speaks of the patience and strength required to keep going.
Part of the 2026 Maningning Art Competition Shortlisted Exhibition, “Balsa sa Laot” invites us to reflect on the journeys we each carry, and the small lights that help us find our way through them.
