The UP Fine Arts Gallery closes the Month of Remembrance through the works of Jose Tence Ruiz, ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ด๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป, ๐ข๐ฐ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ, ๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฝ., and Cap Reyes, ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ-๐๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ฎ, originally part of the ๐๐ข๐ด๐ข๐ญ๐ถ๐ฌ๐บ๐ข๐ตโ ๐๐ข๐ด๐ข๐บ๐ด๐ข๐บ๐ข๐ฏ ๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ข ๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ข๐บ๐ข๐ฏ (๐๐๐๐ ) ๐ฃ๐ซ๐ช๐ง-๐ฃ๐ซ๐ซ๐ฆ Retrospective held at the UP Fine Arts Gallery.

Initially featured in the ABAY Retrospective, an exhibition hosted by Parola in commemoration of the Month of Remembrance last September 2024, the two sculpture installations give insight into the distinct yet varied visual language, particularly in a three-dimensional format, employed by social realists in depicting the precarious sociopolitical conditions in the Philippines during Martial Law.
โ
Jose Tence Ruizโs ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ด๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป, ๐ข๐ฐ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ, ๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฝ. was originally mounted as an installation sealed within a large wooden box that prompted the audience to peek through a small viewing window. โ As described by art historian Dr. Alice Guillermo, the work is a โseated life-size figure of a man in molded resin, a red bulb glowing within its translucent head, while undergoing torture by electric shock,โ and is the artistโs tribute to the hundreds of political prisoners and survivors of human rights violations during Martial Law in the 1970s, whose numbers continue to grow until today. A stark contrast to Ruizโs work, Cap Reyesโ papier-mรขchรฉ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ-๐๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ฎ, presented in university exhibitions of Social Realist artists in 2002 and 2024, recalls a line from a local children's rhyme while evoking the loss of innocence amid precarious realities.
โ
As artworks in the 16th Gwangju Biennale, the two attest to art lending itself to the continuous endeavor of remembering beyond temporal and spatial boundaries, and as a collective activity committed against atrocity and violence.
