Artist Focus |
Anthony Chiou Anthony

In his first exhibition at Namuso Gallery, Anthony Chiou shows a selection of oil paintings on canvas alongside smaller works on paper, as part of the duo presentation ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ with Tja Ling Hu.

Born and raised in Suriname to a Brazilian mother and a Chinese Surinamese father, Chiou works from a position between cultures and continents. Family photographs, remembered landscapes and the particular palette of Suriname become the raw material for layered, intimate compositions.

His interest lies less in documenting a place than in how memory reshapes it. Colour, image and paint surface build on one another until a familiar scene turns into something else: a carrier of belonging, distance and inheritance. What remains are traces of places lived in, people remembered and histories handed down.

These paintings ask how the past keeps living in the present, and how the places and stories we carry shape the way we see.

Following her solo presentation at Investec Cape Town Art Fair in February and her presentation at Art Busan in May, we present new works by Tja Ling Hu, alongside selected paintings first shown in Busan, in our current duo exhibition ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ, featuring Hu and Anthony Chiou.

In her new body of work, Hu turns to Jobโ€™s tears (่–่‹ก, yรฌyว), a plant rooted in Chinese tradition and associated with nourishment, care and healing. Its pearl-like seeds also evoke tears, bringing together suffering and nurture.

Born in the Netherlands to parents who fled China in the 1970s, Hu inherited not a place but a story. Drawing on this heritage, she explores the collective experience of womanhood and the vulnerabilities carried through generations. Through cultural and historical symbols, personal memories and inherited stories, she gives form to experiences that may have been suppressed or left unspoken, yet continue to shape us beneath the surface.

In Huโ€™s work, what we inherit is never simply the past. It can hold both pain and care, opening up the possibility of recognition, transformation and growth.

The World We Carry brings together Anthony Chiou (b. 2003, Suriname) and Tja Ling Hu (b.1987, The Netherlands), two artists whose practices explore what remains of a place, a family history and a culture after distance has intervened.

Born and raised in Suriname, Chiou made the crossing to the Netherlands, carrying with him memories of his birthplace as well as the earlier departures of his ancestors. In richly layered oils, fragments of family photographs, remembered landscapes and saturated colour become paintings of memory: not attempts to reconstruct the past, but ways of holding what still insists on being felt. This is Chiouโ€™s first exhibition with the gallery.

Born in the Netherlands to parents who fled China in the 1970s, Tja Ling Hu explores identity, diaspora and generational memory through the collective experience of womanhood. Drawing on stories inherited from her parents and their roots in China, her work considers how histories we have not personally lived can nonetheless shape our sense of self and belonging. This exhibition focuses on her work in oil, bringing together new paintings with works first shown at Art Busan in May.

Neither artist reproduces home as it was. They remake it through the images, bodies and memories that remain.

Opening Reception
Saturday, 3 October | 4:00โ€“6:00 PM

To cross an ocean is to live in two timelines at once, arriving somewhere new while part of the body remains behind.

Chiou carries Suriname, along with the memory of an earlier departure. Hu carries a story inherited rather than lived - her parentsโ€™ flight from China.

Through saturated oils and quiet, layered tones, both artists explore how home is carried across distance, memory and time.

The two shores never fully meet. Yet somewhere between them, two worlds quietly overlap.

Both artists will be present at the opening.

Meet three artists from Namuso Galleryโ€™s Graduation Show whose practices explore identity, memory, and how personal experience becomes embedded in objects, images, and narratives.

Hung-Fu Tsai Hung-Fu ๏ผˆๅฎ่ผ”๏ผ‰ (b. 1999, Taipei) is a 2026 BA Jewellery graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Working across jewellery, objects, and material practices, he considers how memory, identity, and belonging settle into things, and how attachment gives objects an emotional life.

Sara Ito sara ito (b. 1996, Japan) is a visual artist and researcher based in the Netherlands, and a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Working across photography, video, textiles, and performative installation, she examines cultural representation, mistranslation, and heritage. At Namuso Gallery, she reimagines the traditional kimono, asking how heritage is remembered and represented.

Yuanyuan Zhou (b. 1994, China) is a graduate of ArtEZ University of the Arts, working across painting, sculpture, and performance. Drawing on childhood memories and observed situations, she builds mildly surreal, subtly unsettling environments where rules, surveillance, and individual freedom collide. With a restrained humour, she reflects on how personal experience shapes our understanding of social systems.

Thu Do Thu Do (b. 2005, The Netherlands, of Vietnamese origin) is a painter based in the Netherlands. Working in oil on canvas, Do explores light, reflection, and the material language of painting. Drawing from photographs taken during fleeting encounters with light, she transforms ephemeral moments into restrained paintings that move between recognition and abstraction. Through subtle shifts in colour, surface, and luminosity, her work explores how perception is shaped by memory, atmosphere, and the act of looking.

Geumbin Lee ๊ธˆ๋นˆ Geum Bin (b. 1997, South Korea) is a visual artist whose practice explores absence, memory, and time. Inspired by the Japanese architectural concept of Ma (้–“), the void connecting interior and exterior, Lee creates minimalist works that reflect on the spaces between presence and disappearance. Through rubbing, erasing, and layering, her works accumulate traces of time and contemplation, inviting slow encounters with memory, perception, and subtle traces of life.

Jeanne Lai Jeanne Lai ่ณด็ถญๅ› (b. 2001, Taipei) is a Taiwanese painter and recent Frank Mohr Institute graduate. Working primarily in oil on wood, Lai explores the intricate relationships between humans and animals, examining dominance, dependence, control, and submission. Her paintings reflect on the boundaries between self and other, using animal-human relationships to question how patterns of behaviour shape connections across species.

Sunjoo Lee Sunjoo Lee ๐ŸŒณ ์ด์„ ์ฃผ (b. 1993, South Korea) is an multi-disciplinary artist working across art, technology, and ecology. A 2026 KABK graduate, Lee creates multimedia installations that explore more-than-human perspectives, biomimicry, and symbiosis. Working with materials, technologies, and collaborations with scientists and engineers, her practice investigates the evolving relationships between the biosphere and technosphere.

Taco (Yutong) Huo Taco Yutong Huo (b. 1993, China) is a painter based in the Netherlands, also a Frank Mohr Institute graduate. Drawing on a background in biological sciences, Huo treats culture as a metabolic system โ€” experience transformed into image, ritual, residue, and symbol. His oil paintings, built through layering, erosion, and reconstruction, trace how symbols persist and mutate long after their original meaning fades.
