On World Photography Day, we take a moment to reflect on the role of photography in society. What makes an image stand the test of time?

An image rarely becomes timeless just because of what it shows. It becomes timeless because of who keeps it alive. Like an echo, a photograph needs somewhere to return to. Without that, even the strongest image can fade from view.

Looking ahead, perhaps the images that matter most aren’t the ones that simply echo. They’re the ones that come back to us changed — asking not just to be remembered, but to be seen again with new eyes.

We invited our most esteemed though makers in the photography world to share with us an image they think has or will stand the test of time, and why.

We asked people across the photography industry one question: which image do you think will stand the test of time?

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, public executions in Iran have transformed urban environments into sites of state violence, staged in everyday city spaces to intimidate and silence political opposition.⁠
⁠
Foam Talent Nazanin Hafez has collected images of public executions from Iranian and international news agencies, forming a series of photo collages.⁠
⁠
Her series Spectators seeks to explore how victims can be represented with dignity. Rather than reproducing violence, the work focuses on those who look at it: passersby, observers, even children.⁠
⁠
Spectators is on view at Foam as part of the Foam Talent 2026 exhibition.⁠
It's still on view until 23 August.⁠

Writer, curator and Co-Head of Program for CO/Berlin Boaz Levin () and artist Dawoud Bey () met to discuss his work on history, memory, trauma, and how these continue to exist in the contemporary landscape. ⁠

What follows is an edited conversation conducted via E-mail following those meetings, in which the two discuss what lead Bey to shift his focus away from portraiture, and how his works nevertheless manage to assert Black presence in the conversation about landscape.⁠

Today we're highlighting the Foam Talent Runner-up Mahmoud Abu Hamda (), a Palestinian photographer based in Gaza, working professionally since 2011. ⁠

Abu Hamda collaborates with international organisations and media outlets to distribute his critical documentation of Gaza’s evolving reality, presenting Gaza’s resilience, despair, and humanity. ⁠
⁠
Through his work, he aims to illuminate the power of photography to bear witness, raise global awareness, and inspire humanitarian action.⁠

“I have tried throughout my career to photograph … all the things that are very modern and rather ugly.” — Martin Parr⁠

Parr’s main subjects reflect his enduring fascination with how people behave, dress, and spend their leisure time: mass tourism, consumer culture, class, national stereotypes, fashion, and global clichés. His incisive and often humorous photographs hold up a mirror to society. Although Parr rarely made his social commentary explicit – leaving room for interpretation and sometimes controversy – his images offer powerful observations of everyday life. ⁠

His exhibition Very Modern and Rather Ugly is on view at Foam until 12 August.⁠

For a full five years, Vasantha Yogananthan () travelled through India and Nepal. His photos form a modern interpretation of the Ramayana, a Hinduist text that dates from approximately 300 BC. ⁠

The artist was inspired by the story’s prominent presence in everyday life in India, and how it is constantly being rewritten.⁠
⁠

A gift to his late grandmother.⁠

"Through his project Jahan/ جہان , Ali imagines his beloved grand⁠
mother’s rooftop garden in her neighbourhood, Chamanganj, in Kanpur, Utter Pradesh. Imagined beyond its confines, Naqvi uses the garden⁠
to capture the intangible vastness of love and tenderness he has for her. A careful collection of images from his travels, of birds and plants awaits you, demanding care and closeness.(...)⁠

In a letter to his grandmother, Ali writes, ‘It’s so ironic that our area is called Chamanganj but there’s nothing left which is close to a Chaman — a beautiful garden. I find it hard to go back home now and I can’t imagine how Amma and Abba continue to live there.’"⁠

At once amusing and unsettling, these in-your-face images cast a light on a world shaped by consumption and mass production. ⁠
⁠
By using a macro lens and harsh flash to achieve extreme close-ups and high contrast, Martin Parr created hyperreal images that expose the excesses of global consumer culture. ⁠
⁠
As a photographer, Parr was interested in the crossover between different types of photography and purposefully played with the visual language of advertising to bridge the domains of art and commerce. With Common Sense, he cemented his reputation for incisive, and often witty, observations of everyday life.⁠

Familiar scenes, but something is off.⁠

Weronika Gęsicka () purchased images from American collections of vintage photographs from the 1940s-60s. The origin of the images is unknown, which only makes them more intriguing for Gęsicka. ⁠
⁠
"It is impossible to figure out whether they are spontaneous or entirely staged. We know nothing of the actual ties between the individuals in the photographs; we can only guess at the truthfulness of their gestures and gazes."⁠
⁠
With her distortions, Gęsicka questions the way in which historic images shape our collective memory. Suspending the photograph somewhere between truth and fiction she reformulates its role as a trace of the past. ⁠
⁠
