INTRODUCING CASPER WAAIJER (1995)

Architecture, colour and material in dialogue.

For Art The Hague 2026, The Millen House presents the work of emerging Dutch artist Casper Waaijer, whose bold compositions explore the relationship between architectural structures, rhythm and colour.

Inspired by Brutalist architecture, urban façades and the patterns of everyday infrastructure, Waaijer translates the built environment into a distinctive visual language of geometric forms, layered surfaces and vibrant colour.

Working across painting, screenprinting, tufting and woven industrial straps, he challenges the boundaries between painting, textile and sculptural relief. Materials traditionally associated with construction and functionality become expressive elements, creating compositions that balance precision with playfulness.

Largely self-taught, Waaijer brings an intuitive approach to his practice, combining a fascination with architectural order with a sensitivity to texture, material and colour.

At Art The Hague, his contemporary works enter into dialogue with the expressive abstractions of French artist Pierre Célice (1932–2019), revealing shared interests in structure, rhythm and the possibilities of colour across generations.

INTRODUCING PIERRE CÉLICE (1932–2019)

A language of colour, rhythm and symbol.

For Art The Hague 2026, The Millen House is pleased to introduce the work of French artist Pierre Célice to the Netherlands for the first time, in collaboration with the Maurice Verbaet Collection, Antwerp.

Célice developed a distinctive visual language in which geometric structures, expressive gestures and fragments of coloured paper come together in compositions that move between order and spontaneity.

Beginning his career as a figurative painter in Paris during the 1950s, Célice gradually moved towards abstraction. Figures dissolved into lines, signs and fields of colour, giving rise to a deeply personal vocabulary of recurring shapes and symbols.

Influenced by architecture, non-Western visual traditions and the expressive possibilities of colour, his work occupies a fascinating position between post-war abstraction and the graphic energy of contemporary painting.

At Art The Hague, we present a selection of works spanning several decades of his practice, offering an introduction to an artist whose work deserves renewed attention.

A first glimpse of our presentation at Art The Hague, bringing together twentieth-century and contemporary art in a dialogue of colour, structure and material.

This year, The Millen House introduces the work of French artist Pierre Célice (1932–2019) to the Netherlands, in collaboration with the Maurice Verbaet Collection, Antwerp.

His expressive compositions enter into dialogue with the architectural language and bold material explorations of emerging artist Casper Waaijer.

The presentation is complemented by selected works from our collection, including Christiaan Paul Damsté, Rosa Shepherd and Jo Andersson.

WE ARE PRESENT

After four years in Amsterdam’s Houthavens, The Millen House is opening a new gallery and project space in Amsterdam West.

The new space marks the next chapter for the gallery, continuing our exploration of the dialogue between 20th-century and contemporary art, design and architecture. Through carefully curated encounters between different generations and disciplines, we approach art & design from a broad cultural, historical and architectural perspective.

To mark this new beginning, we are pleased to present PRESENT, the opening exhibition of our new home.
The exhibition includes a site-specific installation by l, created especially for the project room, alongside works by Kaptein, , , Elisabeth Peyton, Egon Schiele, Jan Fabre, , , , , Paul Christiaan Damsté, André van der Vossen and others.
