Nature meets technology. 🌀

Amsterdam-based artist Heleen Blanken explores the boundaries between the organic and the artificial, the analogue and the digital.

Working across installation art, new media and sculpture, she challenges how we perceive and interact with the natural world, creating speculative visions of the future.

During Amsterdam Dance Event, Heleen presents ‘Helios’, a kinetic audiovisual installation created with designer and engineer Daniel de Bruin. Combining light, movement and sound, the installation takes on a different musical interpretation across three evenings.

Can art become a form of resistance?

For Ukrainian artist and activist Sophia Bulgakova, artistic expression and political engagement go hand in hand.

Working across installation, performance and audiovisual art, Sophia explores how personal experiences connect to wider political realities. Against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine, her practice creates space for reflection, collective experiences and resistance.

Combining analogue and digital techniques, she challenges the boundaries between artistic experimentation and political expression.

During Amsterdam Dance Event, Sophia joins Motie, a programme bringing electronic music and visual art together.

EarthSonic x ADE is getting closer. ⚡

On 22 October, EarthSonic takes over Nxt Museum during Amsterdam Dance Event with two immersive premieres where environmental change becomes sound and moving image.

‘Vinorun’ brings rainforest recordings, Indigenous knowledge and environmental data together in new music by Paul Hartnoll of Orbital and traditional Rungus musician Razif Ajip.

‘Two Seas’ connects Finland’s melting Bothnian Bay with Uzbekistan’s vanished Aral Sea through music created by Paranoid London with Finnish and Uzbekistani artists.

Plus: live performances by Paranoid London and Natural Symphony, Roland’s Electronic Petting Zoo and an in-depth conversation with the artists.

The planet is already making noise. Time to listen.

Amsterdam City Hall is getting the Curated by Nxt treatment.

For three days during ADE, Motie transforms the building into a meeting ground for art, music, light and food.

And we’re moving beyond our museum walls to join them. At Amstel 1, Nxt brings together an audiovisual installation by Heleen Blanken and two spatial works by interdisciplinary artist Sophia Bulgakova.

A different setting for digital art, right in the heart of Amsterdam.

On 9 June, three studios in Amsterdam, Cambridge (USA) and Pender Island (Canada) connected for a live television exchange.

Video was turned into sound, sent across telephone lines and rebuilt pixel by pixel on a slow-scan screen.

Slow? Definitely. Ahead of its time? You decide.

Livinus van de Bundt played an important role in the early days of MonteVideo. His work inspired René Coelho to found the gallery in 1978, opening with an exhibition dedicated to Livinus.

Decades later, a photograph brings us back to those early days. After visiting ’Pioneers of Media Art’, Livinus’ daughter Levina shared an image from her personal archive with us, showing René Coelho, Livinus and Levina in front of MonteVideo.

Created in collaboration with LI-MA – Living Media Art and supported by Cultuurloket DigitALL, ’Pioneers of Media Art: The First Years of MonteVideo’ is now on view at Nxt Museum.

Across four digital environments, colours, sounds and landscapes keep changing around you. Each world responds differently to the way you and your fellow player move and interact.

YONK deliberately leaves these places open to interpretation. They have no fixed names or prescribed meanings. You discover what they are by playing your way through them together.

What happens when light starts to feel like something you can touch?

In ‘Impressions’, Nan Hoover moves a hand through a long beam of light. As her fingers cross it, the beam seems to become an object and her hand appears to draw directly with light.

Light was one of Hoover’s most important artistic materials. Working with her own body and the video camera, she turned simple movements into studies of light, shadow and perception. For Hoover, the camera itself became an instrument, no different from a pencil.
