Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley shared a profound connection that transcended musical genres. Throughout the 1970s, these two legends crossed paths, sharing stages, engaging in private jam sessions, and having deep conversations about humanity and using art for change. Their mutual admiration culminated in Stevie Wonder’s 1980 hit, “Master Blaster (Jammin’)”, which he later revealed in a 2024 interview was a direct ode to Bob Marley. The song was inspired by Marley’s electrifying performances and the reggae sound, with lyrics echoing Marley’s themes of joy, unity, and musical liberation. Wonder even intended for Marley to feature on the track and other reggae-inspired cuts from his ‘Hotter Than July’ album. Tragically, a planned joint tour combining The Wailers and Wonderlove, set to celebrate global Black music and unity across continents, was cut short due to Bob Marley’s declining health. Despite the unfulfilled collaborations, their friendship left an indelible mark on music history, showcasing a powerful brotherhood and the universal impact of Marley’s influence.
