Back in 2013, to celebrate Malaysiaโs 50th anniversary, Artemis Art participated in the M50 Project with a presentation called โ50 Shades of Malaysiaโ, a four-sided kiosk panel with 50 small artworks by young and emerging artists, installed for two weeks at Level G2 of Publika
One of the works is โMalaysia Dependence Dayโ by Sabahan visual artist April Tsen, one of the participating artists. The artwork is a critique of the state of democracy then, surrounding the issue of phantom voters that haunted the country at the time.
As Malaysia marks her 63rd year of formation, this is one of the questions we need to ask ourselves. In fact, exactly how far have we come since 1963?
Do we primarily identify ourselves as Malaysians, or are we the ethnic group we belong to, or the religion we belong to, first before we regard ourselves as Malaysians? And are we more cohesive as a country today compared to 13, or 63, years ago?
We have certainly come far since we became Malaysia, but in many respects we still have a long way to go. And the questions we posed here are among the many things we need to honestly ponder on this important day
