The Art By Architects: Beyond Blueprints exhibition has officially concluded.

This presentation offered a rare view into the parallel creative practices of architects, shifting focus from their functional designs to their autonomous fine art. By spotlighting this hidden side, the exhibition explored how structural minds navigate raw form, color, and medium when freed from the constraints of the blueprint.

We extend our profound appreciation to the participating artists for sharing their personal visions, as well as to the collectors, patrons, and visitors whose support and dialogue enriched the gallery space. Captured here are moments from our final days, including a visit by landscape architect Mr. Ng Sek San. Thank you for engaging with this chapter of our journey.

Ho Chin Keng is a Malaysian architect and creative thinker whose works explore the relationship between architecture, art, and human experience
through a strong belief in Design Process thinking. Graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2011, he began his professional journey in Singapore before returning to Penang to establish CKHO Architect in 2017. For Chin Keng, Design Process is not merely a method of problem solving, but a creative journey of questioning, observing, experimenting, and discovering new possibilities. His works often blur the boundaries between architecture and art, where sketches, materials, textures, heritage, and human emotions become part of the creative exploration. Through this process-driven approach, he continuously challenges conventional outcomes to create meaningful spatial and artistic expressions that connect people, memory, culture, and environment.

Art By Architects: Beyond Blueprints
Artist: Ar Fakhri Rahman

Born in 1982 in Kuala Terengganu and raised in Wakaf Bharu, Kelantan, Fakhri continued his secondary education at Sekolah Alam Shah before studying Architecture at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. An award-winning architect, he is a recipient of the Gold Award in PAM Award 2025, recognizing his excellence in architectural practice and contribution to the built environment. His interest in art began in childhood, inspired by his late father’s sketches when he was seven and his DIY carpentry work at home. Since then, observation and self-directed learning have shaped his artistic journey, while his studies in architecture and passion for music and poetry have refined the nuance of his artistic expression. This exhibition marks his first participation in an art exhibition, where he presents his work in a new context beyond architecture, offering a more personal and experimental exploration of visual language. His work explores expression from the inner self outward through lines, depth, layers, color, form, composition, proportion, and texture. Across painting, sculpture, and architecture, he explores a shared language: they shape space, form, and feeling, evoking emotion and transforming ideas into physical and visual experiences meant to be felt, not merely seen.

She allows water, pigment, and chance to interact freely, letting each piece evolve organically. Drawn away from rigid compositions, Rushdina finds quiet satisfaction in watching colours flow, merge, and transform. Artist: Bee Eu Tan

Bee Eu Tan is a Malaysian Architect, Principal of BEU TAN ARCHITECT (BETA), and a full-time lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia. In 2026, she serves as Convenor of the PAM Awards and as a jury member for the Tatler Design Awards. Trained in architecture with a focus on adaptive reuse and sustainable design, she bridges practice and academia. An award-winning architect with multiple Gold and Silver awards at the PAM Awards, her key projects include Penang Digital Library, Penang Harmony Centre, Kedah Digital Library and Guar Kepah Archaeological Gallery. This exhibition marks her first public presentation of line drawings, offering insight into how she conceives forms before they evolve into sketches and built work.

This body of work is grounded in the premise that every good architecture begins with a line. Moving beyond the conventions of the blueprint, the drawings explore how architectural ideas are first formed through acts of reduction, layering, and controlled abstraction. They operate as a pre-technical space where spatial intentions are tested before resolution. Executed in black ink on paper, the process is deliberate and iterative, allowing each line to register intention, adjustment, and refinement. The restraint in material emphasizes structure, proportion, and spatial relationships. Rooted in an architectural practice centered on adaptive reuse, the work reflects an ongoing interest in continuity and transformation, revealing how form is gradually uncovered before it evolves into built architecture. Architecture begins, and returns, to the line.

Adrianta is an architect and educator whose artistic journey is shaped by curiosity, passion, and a lifelong dialogue between art and architecture. From early childhood, creativity was nurtured through sketching, comic drawing, building models from recycled materials, writing poetry, and embracing music as a form of expression. Growing up in Kampung Perlis with his grandparents, later maturing in Penang, and formally trained at UiTM and Oxford Brookes University, his worldview was enriched by diverse cultural and academic influences. Adrianta believes that Architecture is the mother of all Arts, where structure, rhythm, and meaning originate. His artworks draw inspiration from nature, flora, and fauna, interpreted through architectural principles, design elements, and spatial thinking. Exploring digital and abstract art, he continues to experiment with form and emotion, transforming ideas into visual narratives that celebrate imagination, sustainability, and the harmony between nature, design, and human expression.

Artist: Ar Alan Teh

Having aspired to be an artist since childhood, Alan changed his career course to architecture after stumbling upon an article from Reader’s Digest on the American Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei during junior high school. A scholarship from the University of Tasmania, Australia took him to the southern hemisphere for the next 5 years (1995–1999) during which he went on an exchange program in 1996 to the Bergen School of Architecture, Norway for a semester plus a 3-month architectural pilgrimage tour in Europe. He worked in a few KL-based practices, learning the “craft and business” of architecture prior to the setting up of Atelier Alan Teh Architect (AATA) in May 2005. AATA has won several notable awards including PAM Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2020 and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025.

Alan started pick up sketching again in 2015. Devoid of a specific stylistic expression, his plein-air sketching art is based on spontaneous response to the ever-changing light & shadow and the vivid colours of his subjects which normally happens to be architecture in urban settings. His brush strokes are combinations of fundamental watercolour paintings overlapping with fast spontaneous brush strokes of chinese ink painting resulting in a more dynamic composition that often gives a hint of human activities and movements.

I have always had a passion for the arts, following in the footsteps of my late father—a headmaster, artist, and member of Angkatan Pelukis Kedah. My artworks in school and university were a testament to my experimentation with several mediums, including graphite, pen, coloured pencils, oil, watercolour, ink wash, and acrylic. Despite my busy schedule as a practicing architect, I explore the concept of Architecture + Humanity, where people and places become the subject matter, documenting these creations through time-lapse videos. As an example, the act of heroism is encapsulated in my Malim Gunung painting, which commemorates the porters who rescued trapped students on Mount Kinabalu during the 2015 Ranau earthquake. Meanwhile, my comparative portrait, Trump vs Mandela, highlights their diagonally opposite expressions and characters. Whether sketching the cities and buildings I visit or painting portraits of world leaders and loved ones, my art illustrates the intertwined relationship between Architecture + Humanity.
