On September 26 and 27, the European Heritage Days will take place.

The theme of the 2026 edition is “Protecting Heritage. Renewing, Resisting, Reinventing.”

For this reason, we have decided to tell you the story of four Nubian temples that, following the construction of the Aswan Dam, risked disappearing forever.

In 1960, UNESCO issued an appeal to countries around the world, asking them to contribute to the rescue of these monuments, which would otherwise have disappeared beneath the waters of the new Lake Nasser, the artificial reservoir created at the foot of the dam.

As a token of gratitude for their contribution, participating countries were given archaeological artefacts, while four countries received entire temples: Turin received the Temple of Ellesyia, New York the Temple of Dendur, Leiden the Temple of Taffeh, and Madrid the Temple of Debod.

Over the coming days, in collaboration with the in Leiden and the City of Madrid (.museosmadrid), we will retrace the history of all the Nubian monuments preserved in Europe and the extraordinary journey they have undertaken.
