Tec Fase, Rua Amaral Gurgel, São Paulo, Brazil. One of Latin America’s most iconic murals.

Homem Urbano has faced the Minhocão, the elevated highway that crosses the city centre, since 2015. Sixty-four metres high, it gathers an entire road network into a single head: avenues, flyovers and traffic in place of a face.

In 1970 Giorgio de Chirico, who had just refused to be sorted into an early and a late period, turned to a higher court and devoted an entire sheet to the Muse of History.

He made her three times over, each in a different inking, so that no two read the same way. On the second version he went further and added watercolour where the copper leaves the paper untouched. A single subject, told more than once, by the father of Metaphysical art.

In the spring of 1970 the first complete retrospective of Giorgio de Chirico’s career opened at Palazzo Reale in Milan: 180 loans from around the world, sixty years of painting and drawing under a single roof. He was about to turn eighty-two.

For decades the critics had split that span, the Metaphysical beginnings on one side and everything that followed on the other. During the exhibition the press asked why he had gone back to the earlier half. There had been no return, he replied, because he had never left. A picture, he added, “isn’t a postage stamp”, to be valued by the date on it. Anyone who thought so should take up stamp collecting.

This summer, Tec Fase was among the guests of Révolution V52, the year-long programme conceived by L’Unique Musée Dehors. He presented Collage Sao Paulo at La Vitrine in Caen and Marsella on the screen of Digitale Zone in Marseille.

The first time Roy Lichtenstein drew his Ben-Day dots for a lithograph, he gave them a face: this one. Girl took him two weeks of work, entirely by hand, according to the man who commissioned her.

He was the poet Walasse Ting, who gathered twenty-eight artists from both sides of the Atlantic between the covers of 1¢ Life. Andy Warhol contributed the lips of Marilyn Monroe; Lichtenstein, her.

Complete examples of the publication, this lithograph among their pages, are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Here she is: the blonde girl who became one of the most recognisable icons of Pop Art.

Life magazine knew what a question could do. Its 1949 profile of Jackson Po***ck asked whether he was the greatest living painter in the United States, and brought him national fame.

In January 1964 it tried the reverse. The subject was Roy Lichtenstein, whose paintings in Ben-Day dots had divided the critics. The headline: “Is He the Worst Artist in the U.S.?”

His best answer already existed. He had made it the year before: not on canvas, but for the pages of the boldest illustrated volume of its time, then still under way.

Neon Multicolor is colour at full pressure. Thousands of concentric circles run edge to edge, fluorescent orange against green, pink against blue, until no ground remains visible.

Up close, the work is alive and instinctive. From a distance, the same surface resolves into structure, calm, contemplation. The painting changes with every step the viewer takes.

Noj Barker

Noj Barker chooses the palette before anything else. A form of synaesthesia binds colour to state of mind, and the decision is made at that level: not how the painting will look, but what it will carry.

Then the dots begin. Thousands of individual touches laid entirely by hand, in sessions that stretch across dozens of hours.

“I don’t stop”, he says, “until the obsession becomes visible”.

In February 2023, Tec Fase returned to Buenos Aires from São Paulo, his base for more than a decade, to realise La Lagartija, a 120-metre painting running the length of Bartolomé Mitre. It was presented by ArtHaus together with the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.

He chose the lizard as an emblem of renewal for the historic centre, for its capacity to regenerate what it loses.

Three years on, it endures as the largest work ever painted on asphalt in Argentina, and as a key to his entire practice: images laid on the ground, revealed in full only from above.
