„7km” by Kirill Golovchenko

Seven kilometres before the gates of Odessa there is the biggest marketplace of Europe. The oldest part of the market is called the »field of the miracles«.
The beginnings of this market go back to the second world war. In 1989 it transformed from the most famous flea market of the Soviet Union into the biggest shopping centre in Europe. Beginning with only 4 hectares of retail space it grew to more than 70 hectares of goods stacked as far as the eye can reach. Here most shops are neither buildings nor kiosks but countless rows of shipping containers converted to retail space paving the 7km road into the city.

„Kachalka Muscle Beach” by Kirill Golovchenko (2010)

Kirill Golovchenko (born 1974 in Odessa, Ukraine) studied photography and design under Barbara Klemm and Kris Scholz at Darmstadt University in 2002-2007. In his photographic series Kachalka Muscle Beach, Kirill Golovchenko photographs cryptic overviews of the local gym in a series of unstaged environmental portraits and still lifes. In the subliminal scenarios of the gym’s locals, Golovchenko meditates on the importance of the body to the sport, and the sport to the community.

In the words of Golovchenko:

Kachalka jumps across my tongue and pumps its way through my ears like a cheerleading riff, anticipating the exhilarating action to come. Listening to photographs is one way of interpreting how much an image can tell you. But
there’s no need to place your ear to this [image] ...just look. The exasperated faces and bodies in the midst of forcing — holding — CLUNK. It is the faces and bodies of the regulars, newcomers, elders and youth that enliven this orchestra
of iron, trees and sand.

Come and visit us at between the 12th and the 15th of May in Somerset House in London!

Misha Pedan, „Untitled”, End of La Belle Epoque series, Kharkov, 1988

Misha Pedan (b. 1957 in Kharkiv) is a member of Hosprom, which was the second group after „Vremia” that made its place as a part of Kharkiv School of Photography phenomenon. Established in the late 80s, the group’s creation was accompanied by the systemic changes introduced by Gorbachev (Perestroika) as well as the general feeling of great failure of the Soviet Union. The group was usually gathering in coffee shops and disputing about their works and about photography itself.

Misha Pedan emerged as a photographer in the early 80s. In 1986 he organized his first exhibition in the history of KSOP showcasing the works of Gosprom and Vremia. The exhibition was shut down by the KGB after a couple of days because of its violation of Soviet taboos.

„The last Soviet generation was used to living under the camera's gaze, it liked to see itself in the image and was grateful for the camera's attention. In Misha Pedan's shots, the subject is unafraid of the camera; he does not suspect it of spying or betrayal. He does not appear to have any secrets and is simply happy sharing his good spirits. It is possible that the beautiful epoch's unconditional love of photography originates in a presentiment of the epoch's imminent end. Misha Pedan records life as it approaches the point of no return – not in a breakdown, nor in explosion nor in petrification, but in a state of exhaustion, surrounded by an aura of delicate decadence.” ~ Irina Sandomirskaia

30/04/2022

During Photo London 2022 we will also showcase works of Oleksandr Suprun, one of the representatives of the first generation of Kharkiv School of Photography (KSOP). In the early 70s he was a member of Vremia group with Oleg Maliovany, Eugeny Pavlov, Juri Rupin and other artists from the first generation of KSOP. The group’s activity was a form of opposition to the prevailing socialist realism and a way to express an artistic freedom during the times of oppression in the Soviet Union.
Photomontage is the prevailing method in Suprun’s works. His collage compositions were reminiscent of avant-garde experiments with the form that drew attention to the perspective and depth of the composition. This grotesque pictures usually depicted the most vulnerable society groups like elderly people and kids, often placed against a sinister-looking urban background with dramatic high-contrast skies. Distinctive lower angle is an effect of use of candid camera which was placed in specially-constructed hand bags.
Suprun’s works allowed him to transform, modify and reshape depicted reality by creating pictures from duplicated photos arranged at different angles, like in one of his famous works Lilies of the Valley (Springtime in the Forest) where the same flower fragment was used 51 times. Amongst other photomontages the thesis about the objectivity and authenticity of photography ceases to be valid, which, as it turns out, may be the result of manipulation - in this case creative, but also political or ideological.

For the upcoming week we will present the stories of Ukrainian photographers whose work we will exhibit during our Photo London 2022 exhibition.

We start with an introduction of Evgeniy Pavlov’s “Violin” series.

Evgeniy Pavlov took his first steps in art in the late 1960s, and by 1981, along with his friend Jury Rupin, he already established Vremia, a group of avant-garde Kharkiv photographers.

The group’s arrival marked the beginning of the phenomenon of the Kharkiv school of photography, known for its “blow theory.” For a long time it was the only active center of the photo avant-garde in Ukraine.

Pavlov’s “Violin” series, shot in 1972, depicting a happening of young n**e male hippies was, in the artist’s own words, "completely opposite to the entire paradigm of Soviet photography”. When it was published in Fotografia magazine in Poland in 1973, in the Soviet Union both the work and the fact of publication came to be considered an ideological diversion, when defeminization and demasculinization were imposed by the Soviet regime.

The work is also perceived in the context of the Soviet hippie movement and the triumphant march of the music culture of the Beatles in the late 1960s–early 1970s. The main innovation of the work, significant for the general cultural space of unaffiliated art in the USSR, was the massive shot of the naked male model, which was done as an artistic project. This work with the group of “hippie” youths became the prototype of happenings and events shot as film stills.

Even dignified by the instrument, this transgression of the erotic subject was perceived as an attempt on the moral foundations of Soviet society. But thanks to the violin’s presence, the performance “with musical instruments” invoked high art, bringing to mind connotations with classics of visual art.

If you would like to see Pavlov’s “Violin” series, please join us at Photo London 2022 () between the 12th and 15th of May in Somerset House in London!

“A Modern Odyssey” is a project made during a real, non-invented, journey on the cargo ship Nordic Odyssey, transporting 70,000 tons of iron ore from the Russian port-city Murmansk. It waded through the ice of the Arctic waters, led by an icebreaker, then crossed foggy Bering Strait and continued along the far-eastern parts of Russia and Japan before arriving at a newly built port on the shore of China. The trip took place in July and the beginning of August of 2012 and lasted around one month. There were only 23 people onboard a ship 225 meters long, weighing around 40,000 tons – five Ukrainian officers, one ice pilot from Russia, and seventeen Filipino seafarers.

For over 20 years, the women of Benin City in Nigeria have traveled to Italy to work in the s*x trade. Every year, successful ones recruit younger girls to follow in their steps. Most migrant women, including those who end up in the s*x industry, have made a clear decision to leave home and take their chances overseas. They are headstrong and ambitious women who migrate in order to escape conflict, persecution, environmental degradation, natural disasters, and other situations that affect their habitat and livelihood. They have chosen a variety of ways to exploit their personal assets. These range from being erotic dancers, to real contact work of varying levels of intimacy.
