Can you already recognize the saint?

Even in this early stage, when the wood is still rough and many details are only beginning to appear, the character of the figure slowly starts to emerge.

The posture, the face, the gesture, and the first carved lines already give a hint of who this saint will become.

This is one of the most fascinating moments in the creation of a statue: when the block of wood begins to reveal its identity.

From our historical archive

A historic page from the early years of Ferdinand Stuflesser, showing our workshop as a place dedicated to altar building and ecclesiastical sculpture in St. Ulrich / Ortisei, Val Gardena.

The document reflects a long tradition of sacred art, with hand-carved Stations of the Cross, church furnishings, and religious sculpture already being created for parishes far beyond our valley.

This St. Michael the Archangel has passed through the hands, eyes, and patience of our sculptor. Every line, every movement, every expression was shaped with intention.

And now, with great pride, this statue too leaves the workshop of our sculptor — ready to take its place, to stand as a sign of strength, protection, and faith.

From silence and wood, a sacred image is born.
