Welcome back to the gallery!
With the series Piscine (Pools, 2020), created during the lockdown, the gaze shifts from above to below. Swimming pools emptied of water and human presence are transformed into silent surfaces traversed by cool gradients of gray, purple, dark green, and blue. The atmosphere appears nocturnal and suspended, far removed from the luminous imagery of the swimming pool. The absence of figures accentuates a sense of distance, as if these places were observed through a digital memory or a satellite view. Here, movement fades into a melancholic drift: what was once the joyful run of Balla’s little girl becomes waiting, stillness, and residual trace. - Sharon Hecker

M77 Select: Tino Stefanoni
Tino Stefanoni (6 July 1937 – 2 December 2017), born in Lecco, Italy, studied art at the Beato Angelico college in Lecco, and Architecture and the Milan Polytechnic.
He has always addressed the world of things and of everyday objects, representing them in their most disarming obviousness, as pictures in a visual spelling-book, or pages of an instruction booklet in which images replace words.
The fake enchantment, therefore, of his apparently classical art, disguises the lyrical-conceptual moment of the artist’s work, entirely and strictly rational and, paradoxically, “emotionally rational” to the point of wanting to stress that painting is no more than an object for the mind, in just the same way that a chair, a table, or a bed, are objects for the body.

M77 Select: Mat Collishaw
Born Jan. 6, 1966, in Nottingham, UK, Mat Collishaw studied at Goldsmiths College London in the 1980s, where he became part of a legendary generation of artists that would go down in history as the “Young British Artists” (YBAs), along with the likes of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. This art movement became known for its tendency to challenge artistic traditions and its emphasis on questioning the boundaries of contemporary art.

Collishaw explores how technology and media affect our perception of reality, emphasizing the social and psychological implications of this constant visual exposure. Collishaw’s works invite viewers to reflect on the consequences of individual and collective choices, violence, morality, and human frailty. His provocative approach sets out to shake viewers and lead them to question their role in society as well as the power dynamics that govern its evolution.

M77 News: on August 29, Emilio Isgrò presents the installation Armonium delle allodole impazzite at Malga Costa, Val di Sella, Borgo Valsugana.

The “Harmonium of the Mad Larks” is an enigmatic and monumental musical instrument with a row of piano keys running along its perimeter.
The work, presented for the first time in Brescia and produced by the Fondazione Brescia Musei in co-production with Arte Sella, will be permanently installed in the outdoor space selected by the artist himself in the Malga Costa area.

M77 Select: Maria Lai
Maria Lai (Ulassai, 27 September 1919 – Cardedu, 16 April 2013) is today one of the great names of the international art scene.

Her artworks are in important museums world-wide and in some of the most prestigious private collections. One of the most unique and profound voices of Italian post-war art, Maria Lai has articulated her artistic practice through various media including weaving, embroidery, drawing and writing. Each work reflects the intense echo of an ancient relationship that recalls the dawn of narration and poetry.
One of the distinctive features of Maria Lai’s work is her preponderant use of textile art. Lai was a pioneer in combining conceptual art with the tradition of Sardinian textile crafts. She used threads, cloth and fabrics to create artworks that explore the concept of connections between individuals, memory, and time. Her innovative approach broke new ground in the field of visual arts, pushing the boundaries of traditional art.

🎈 Happy Birthday to Alessandro Mendini!
Few people have been as instrumental in promoting avant-garde Italian design as Alessandro Mendini. The architect, designer, journalist, poet, and educator is best known for his holistic postmodern approach, freely combining elements from various cultures and time periods, while mixing the highbrow with kitsch.

One of his most iconic designs is the Proust armchair, created in 1978, which helped define his distinctive style. The armchair features an intricate and decorative design inspired by the “puntinismo” art movement. This piece became a symbol of postmodern design and helped solidify Mendini’s reputation as an innovator in his field. Over the course of his career, he created a fairy-tale world of objects, furniture, paintings, writings, environments, architecture, and situations that were often intertwined, controversial, paradoxical, ironic, and literary.

M77 Select: Titina Maselli
Born in Rome in 1924, TitinaMaselli was one of the most significant figures in Italian and international painting of the second half of the twentieth century. Her powerful and visionary pictorial language stands apart from the dominant movements of her time, while maintaining a dialogue with Futurism, and continued to evolve consistently over more than five decades.

Alongside her painting practice, from the mid 1970s onward she also worked extensively in stage design for theater and opera. Titina Maselli passed away in Rome in 2005, leaving behind an artistic legacy of extraordinary strength and lasting relevance.

While Maria Lai draws, sculpts, and assembles threads, fabrics, books, poetry—and above all, concepts—Antonio Marras experiments across every kind of language with a more theatrical and visionary approach. Yet for both, the creative act produces a separation from the world as it is already known, pushing visual communication beyond its limits. The artwork thus emerges as an expression of a rebellious solitude, a suspension of the familiar order of reality in favour of a different vision—an “elsewhere” made of fragments and encounters.
