We are pleased to announce the publication of “Michele Ciacciofera. Lettere mediterranee”, the exhibition catalogue dedicated to the last solo show of the artist presented in BUILDING GALLERY in Milan (29.10.2025-20.12.2025).

📚The catalogue, published by BUILDING Publisher, includes texts by Christine Macel, Elio Cappuccio and Angelo Crespi, as well as a previously unpublished conversation between Christine Macel and Michele Ciacciofera. In addition to this content, the publication features a complete photographic documentation of the exhibition project.

“Vincenzo Castella. Timeless Archaeology”

Curator Marco Scotini highlights a fundamental aspect of Castella’s photography, emphasized by Luigi Ghirri and later taken up by the philosopher Louis Marin: the idea of a memory without memories. “Throughout his work, Castella has sought to detach and de-subjectivize the photographic gaze from the portrayed object: to reduce, through distance from the object, the immediate emotional involvement. In his images, everything seems to crystallize and solidify, belonging to a non-chronological past.”

“Nidi”, made of woven and braided rattan, takes the form of an ever-evolving organism—an open shape that seems to develop according to the principles of biological growth. The structure gradually takes shape through the dialogue between the artist’s gesture and the inherent behavior of the materials, following a process in which control and unpredictability coexist. Thus, the work seems to follow the same logic of the development found in nature, where form is never a fixed entity, but the result of constant evolution. The rattan weave creates a light, porous texture that evokes the primitive architecture of a nest, the art of weaving, and the anatomical structure of the body; the fibers do not delimit a closed volume but generate a permeable membrane traversed by elements that expand into space.

🗓️From September 10th to October 10th, 2026
📌Opening: on Thursday, September 10th, 2026, from 5.00PM to 8.30PM staytuned

Conceived as a “rainbow hunt” and a pursuit of ephemeral atmospheric phenomena capable of inspiring awe through their beauty and unpredictability, the artist’s expedition gradually evolved into a more intimate path of research. It moved from the investigation of external forms of interiorization, such as iridescence, to practices of introspection, ultimately leading to the exploration of an intimate and personal space of light.

Curator Marco Scotini offers an in-depth exploration of the exhibition’s key theme, which is effectively expressed in its title: “Industrial photography is a concept that is deeply integrated into Castella’s work yet possesses its own distinct character, as revealed primarily through an interpretation rooted in the temporality of the photographer’s image.” When talking about industrial photography, the term ‘industrial archaeology’ is often used; the word ‘timeless’ has been brought closer to this idea: we are, in fact, dealing with machinery that has lost its relevance in the contemporary world and that has gradually become embedded in our artificial landscape since the nineteenth century.”

L’evento è gratuito e non richiede prenotazione.

Sguardo sensibile e intenso, Aurelio Amendola ha attraversato la storia dell’arte con la sua macchina fotografica, trasformando la luce in racconto. Dalle sculture immortali di Michelangelo e Bernini fino alla forza contemporanea di Emilio Vedova e Alberto Burri, le sue immagini rivelano la vita segreta delle opere e il volto degli artisti. Attraverso i suoi scatti, Amendola ha rivelato la materia più viva e segreta del marmo, la sostanza e la materia tangibile: la pelle del David di Michelangelo, l’energia assoluta di Bernini nel Ratto di Proserpina e la sensualità prepotente di Amore e Psiche di Canova. Unica è anche la sua capacità di narrare la storia più privata del “fare arte” di alcuni grandi artisti del XX secolo, da Giorgio de Chirico ad Alberto Burri, da Roy Lichtenstein ad Andy Warhol. Ritratti che hanno segnato la storia dell’arte contemporanea e fissato il potente atto della creazione artistica.

Artworks evoke the fragile and even impenetrable image of collective memory and its conditioning. As the artist states: “In bookshelves, which are already laden with hidden realities, I was fascinated by the seriality of the aligned books. The shadows that multiply the lines on the wall suggested to me the relationship—both symbolic and literal—with the cage.”

“In Vincenzo Castella’s work”, says curator Marco Scotini “there is a constant exploration of the relationship between reality and fiction—between two dimensions whose boundary is difficult to identify. It is enough to think about the color used throughout his photography, and in particular in his industrial images. These nocturnal industrial sites resemble underground villages: places that are entirely artificial and stripped of their natural context in relation to their function. Castella introduces an element of mystery into a highly realistic portrait.”
