La Galleria Provinciale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è stata istituita nel settembre del 1980 al piano terra di Palazzo Dogana, uno degli edifici più rappresentativi della città di Foggia e della storia della Capitanata, sede settecentesca della Regia Dogana della “Mena delle pecore”. Il percorso museale si compone di numerose sale espositive in cui si ammirano opere di artisti vissuti tra XIX e
XX secolo, alcune di illustri pittori dauni e pugliesi e altre firmate da nomi ormai celebri in tutto il mondo. L’esposizione si apre con la sala dei dipinti cosiddetti “ammonitori” raffiguranti personaggi illustri della Capitanata, per poi dipanarsi in percorsi tematici che vanno dal ritratto pittorico nelle opere di artisti dauni del secondo Ottocento fino alle opere dei pittori dauni del primo e secondo Novecento, passando per le due suggestive salette dedicate agli artisti colombiani Cesare Siviglia e Fernando Botero. Scopo della Galleria è quello di documentare l’attività artistica in Capitanata tra Ottocento e Novecento, e di promuovere, con mostre temporanee, la conoscenza delle più avanzate ricerche artistiche contemporanee. The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery was founded on September 1980 at the ground floor of Palazzo Dogana, one of the most representative edifices in the city of Foggia and in the history of the Capitanata, it’s the 18th century location of the "Regia Dogana della mena delle pecore. The museum’s path is composed of many expositive halls in which you can admire works of artists lived between the 18th and the 20th century, some of these works are of Daunian and Apulian distinguished painters and others are signed by names now famous all over the world. The exposition opens with the hall of the so-called “heralds” paintings depicting illustrious characters of the Capitanata, and then it unravels thematic paths that go from the pictorial portray in works of Daunian artists of the second half of 1800 to works of Daunian painters of the first and second part of 1900, passing through two suggestive rooms dedicated to the Colombian artists Cesare Siviglia and Fernando Botero. The purpose of the Gallery is to record the artistical activity in Capitanata between 1800 and 1900 and to promote, with temporary exhibitions, the knowledge of the most advanced artistical and contemporary research.
