There is more than one way to measure greatness at Jaigarh, Jaivan commands attention with its extraordinary scale. Yet, in the details of its barrel lies another story, one of intricate ornamentation, skilled craftsmanship and an eye for beauty.

History is not only found in what an object was built to do, but also in the details it has carried through time.

Jaigarh was never built once and left untouched. Across its long history, the fort was continuously repaired, strengthened and expanded, adapting to changing needs and circumstances.

Its walls carry traces of that life, layers of plaster and colour, weathering, repairs, cracks and surfaces shaped by time. What may first appear to be simply a beautiful or unusual texture is, on closer inspection, a record of the fort itself. Each surface has been exposed to the elements, altered by use, cared for, repaired and allowed to age.

Look closely enough, and the walls begin to tell their own story. Of a fort that has been built, strengthened, repaired and adapted across generations.

Somewhere between the cracks, colours and layers is a record of time.

Architecture is read through the spaces it shelters. At Jaigarh, that reading runs deep, through courtyards, passages, and open expanses, each built with its own scale and purpose, each opening naturally into the next.

The Jaigarh Heritage Festival is where the fort turns into a single stage. Moving through its courtyards and corridors, you experience Jaigarh the way it was designed to be lived in, not as isolated structures, but as a sequence, one space leading into another.

On World Architecture Day, that’s the view worth celebrating: walls built to endure, still serving the people who gather within them.

A fort is understood best when it is walked through, and the Jaigarh Heritage Festival is where that continuity comes alive, this year on 18th, 19th and 20th December.

Two forts, one hillside, and a passage that has connected them for centuries.

Yesterday, The Citadel Trail: Amer to Jaigarh took participants from Amer Palace through the historic tunnel, emerging near Ganesh Pol on the Jaigarh-Amer route. Led by Neeraj Chauhan (Neeraj Chauhan ), the walk traced the movement, architecture, and stories of this connecting route, and the relationship between the palace complex of Amer and the fortified landscape of Jaigarh.

Our thanks to Neeraj Chauhan for leading the walk, and to everyone who joined us on the trail.

Some routes are best understood on foot. Until the next walk.

Parivartini Ekadashi, Dol Gyaras, Jal Jhulni Ekadashi, the names shift with the region, but at Jaigarh, the day has its own quiet choreography. The idol is brought out from the open tanka, given its ceremonial bath, carried to the closed tanka, and offerings are distributed among the people gathered, the palanquin borne by hand through stone corridors and gateways, the fort’s walls standing witness, before the diya is lit and prasad passed among those who’ve gathered. It is one local expression of a much larger turning point: the moment in Chaturmas when devotion moves from stillness into ritual.

Among the year’s Ekadashis, four stand out as the major ones: Nirjala Ekadashi, Devshayani Ekadashi, Devuthani Ekadashi, and Jal Jhulni, each marking its own shift in the devotional calendar. Here’s a look at the procession that took place yesterday, a tradition repeated so many times over the years, it’s just as much a part of Jaigarh now as its ramparts.

Meet Hawaldar Maan Singh Ji, one of the quiet caretakers of Jaigarh. There are people who work at a fort, and there are people who belong to it.

Mann Singh Ji is the latter. Since 1986, he’s spent nearly four decades looking after Jaigarh, through changing seasons and changing times. Ask him about the fort, and he won’t just describe the stone and history, he’ll tell you about a place he’s spent his life caring for. This is his story, and in many ways, it’s the fort’s story too.

As the Jaigarh Heritage Festival brings the fort’s history to life for visitors, it’s worth remembering the ones who’ve been living that history all along.

Ganesh Chaturthi is observed at Jaigarh as it is in every household, with Lord Ganesha’s blessings sought before all else. The pooja is performed at every gate and entrance of the fort, invoking the remover of obstacles to guard each threshold, just as a family would at the doorway of their own home.

May Lord Ganesha’s blessings remain upon Jaigarh and all who pass through its gates.
