Following the acclaimed institutional exhibition at the East Slovak Gallery in Košice, OMARA now arrives at Longtermhandstand with the first exhibition in the gallery’s history to occupy the entire building with the work of a single artist. Curated by Peter Bencze

Bringing together key works spanning the full arc of her practice, the exhibition unfolds across both floors through paintings, text works, self portraits, political works, and her iconic miniature paintings created on found cardboard and matchboxes.

Beginning to paint at the age of forty three without formal training, OMARA transformed memories, illness, motherhood, poverty, desire, humour, and survival into a radically personal visual language unlike any other.

The show is accompanied by a deep dive text by the mega Sonja Teszler.

The exhibition title originates from a real question OMARA once asked live on a radio programme about dream interpretation:

“Once they were talking about dream interpretation in the radio. I called in and asked how it was possible that the things I dream about always come true.”

She did not simply document reality.
She painted herself into another one.

The remarkable solo exhibition of OMARA Mara Oláh at the East Slovak Gallery in Košice has officially come to an end.

This Is What I See From the Back Window at Sunset offered an immersive journey through the life and visionary universe of one of the most singular voices in contemporary art. Bringing together paintings, miniatures, tarot cards, archival material, film, and music beloved by OMARA herself, the exhibition unfolded as a deeply emotional portrait of survival, humour, intuition, and radical freedom.

From her iconic text based paintings to intimate works made on cigarette boxes and wooden fragments, OMARA’s practice transformed personal pain, social struggle, and everyday life into a visual language unlike any other.

The exhibition traced her journey from the self proclaimed “one eyed Gypsy OMARA” to an internationally celebrated artist exhibited from documenta to the Venice Biennale.

And this is not the end.

We are excited to announce that a new solo exhibition dedicated to OMARA Mara Oláh will open at Longtermhandstand on May 27.

We are deeply grateful for the incredible response to Longtermhandstand’s solo presentation of new works by Kata Tranker at ESTHER III.

From being featured in The Wall Street Journal and Observer to being highlighted by CULTURED in “7 Artists to Watch at the New York Fairs This Weekend”, the past days have been truly unforgettable.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who visited, supported, wrote about, collected, and connected with the works.

Special thanks to Olga Temnikova and Margot Samel, the mothers of Esther, for creating such a unique and generous platform and for bringing together this amazing community.

We are open today until 5pm at the Estonian House.

We are thrilled that Longtermhandstand’s presentation of new works by Kata Tranker at ESTHER III has been included in The Wall Street Journal’s roundup:

“The Best Art at Frieze New York, Future Fair, NADA and Esther III”
written by Brian P. Kelly

The article highlights standout presentations across New York Art Week, and we are incredibly happy to see Kata Tranker’s works featured among them.

Two more days at Esther III.
