Just look at that. Pure class. A classic Kieran Stiles painting ‘Island Path’ is part of our current show, Archipelago in Woodstock.
Every brushstroke is classic Stiles. Small scale but with great presence the work is like a gem, glistening from within the frame. And the frame. Well that’s the exquisite QED who offer such craftsmanship and are second to none when it comes to hand cut bespoke framing. It’s the lovely Philippa at the gallery today so do pop in and say hello if you’re passing by.

Wonderful day looking at art in London. This is my job 😊 and I realise it’s a very lucky and wonderful thing to do.

Today I went to Sothebys and also to see some clients and these are some of the glories from Sothebys. Not all for sale! The Derain, Mondrian, Sickert and Freud of Minton were all in an exhibition celebrating museums at Sothebys - London and Artistic Crossroads 💫 Fuelled today by empanadas 🥟 .

These fabulous aprons belong to the beautiful - ✨inside and out 💫 Jemma Powell .jemma.art - and they pretty much sum up why I love studio visits! It’s always the little details and insights that are thrilling. I’ll never forget seeing the view of sheep from Henry Moore’s studio in Much Hadham and thinking ‘aha, of course, that’s where the etchings of sheep come from!.’ It’s the little insights to their thought process, technique and surrounding influences that are so enthralling and it’s like a jigsaw of the creative mind and process.

Why was I at the studio? Watch this space 😉 Jemma’s practice is rooted in a love and observation of art but her generous spirit and warm heart spills out into her work, and just sometimes onto her aprons too 😊

Thank you Jemma for a lovely morning .jemma.art

Opening today 10-5pm our new exhibition featuring British Prints from 1970-today by Terry Frost, Howard Hodgkin, Leon Kossoff, Richard Smith and William Tillyer. This is an opportunity to see first hand some of the very best original prints by these major Museum level British artists here in the Cotswolds.

When we started Zuleika Gallery in 2015 our mission was - and still is - to bring the best art to Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds, and to introduce people to the joy of collecting art and the pleasure great art can bring. We wanted and still wish to break down the barriers of price and snobbery by making top level art by top level artists accessible. This is what this show is about - accessing great art! We want the work to be enjoyed and viewed (as much as we appreciate the sales). We are an inclusive space - all are welcome. Too often we hear how intimidating it is to step into a commercial art gallery. Please know that is not who we are at Zuleika.

Philippa will be in the gallery today and tomorrow for those who wish to drop by and Lizzie on Saturday. There is no official opening but open days from now until Saturday. All our welcome to come and enjoy this sanctuary of art and we look forward to seeing you.

🖼️ Fake or Fortune 🧐🔍

On a recent visit to a VERY high end interior design practise I spotted a fake. Let’s call it out for what it is. Here it is in picture one. The second image is the original print it is after,
a copy of which we have sold, and finally a beautiful construction in the collection of one of our dearest friends and clients.

Victor Pasmore (1908-1998) is famous in the history of British art for the dramatic shift he made between figuration and abstraction in the 1940s. The shift in his practise at that time to pure abstraction by the warly 1950s is hailed as one of the most marked and significant examples of an artist embracing modernism in the UK and he is in major public collections like Tate and Pallant House Gallery just to name a couple. His work is highly sought after and whenever we hold stock it never sticks around for long…

Which would you want? Does this matter? For me it raises questions about authenticity, not only of the work but of the ‘high end’ interior design studio.

Art speaks values. What values do you wish to display?

Let’s start the week with a pop of colour!
Here we have Michael Craig-Martin (b.1941) It’s an original work on acrylic on aluminium so pretty special. Craig-Martin taught at Goldsmiths for many years and is credited with being the hugely influential tutor for the YBA’s (Young British Artists) - the group that emerged in the 1990s that included Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas.

Simply called Untitled (Headphone series) this painting encapsulates the punchy and direct nature of Craig-Martins work where he elevated objects of design and mass culture to a higher status - a bit like Roy Lichtenstein and Warhol in previous generations, a pop artist looking at general culture.

This work is hanging in the woodstock gallery (see the previous reel) and is 100 x 100 cm. Priced at £32,000+ARR it is a rare original example of his work on such an accessible scale. Craig-Martin has exhibited all over the world over the last 40 years and has been knighted and awarded a CBE for services towards art. He also an RA.

Do come and see this fantastic painting first hand in our Woodstock gallery.
