Hannah Heys Ceramics

Hannah Heys’ decorative vases are inspired by the juxtaposition of architecture and nature. The abstract freehand designs on each are created using the ancient technique of sgraffito, each line etched by hand with precision.

Hannah says, ‘Each vase is hand thrown using either stoneware or porcelain clay, acting as a blank canvas ready for freehand delicate decoration, using sgraffito and slip trailed techniques, in a variety of striking colours. The detailed abstract freehand decoration on each vase highlights the contrast between the delicacy of the decoration and the solidity of the high fired ceramics.’

Graduating in 2009 with a BA Hons in Textiles & Surface Design, Hannah has worked in a variety of mediums throughout her career, consistently combining traditional methods of craft with contemporary design. She has since exhibited her work nationally, recently including London Craft Week

Each vessel varies in size, from miniature to large, making them collectible modern heirlooms.

Sue Gunn Ceramics

We are delighted to be exhibiting a collection of Sue Gunn's exquistie ceramic candelabra at the gallery alongside Daniel Ablitt's solo exhibition 'Stimmungslandschaft'.

The philosophy and textures of Sue's ceramics respond to central theme of the exhibition, how we are connected to and respond to the landscapes around us.

Created from either terracotta or white porcelain, Sue creates textures with the glazes, scorched earth, cracked earth and ice melt, all themes that resonate.

Sculpted into eccentric shapes by an intricate network of clay the candelabra elegantly bridge function and form.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 3rd September

Daniel Ablitt Q&A Part Two

We go behind the scenes at Daniel Ablitt’s Bristol studio as he prepares for his solo exhibition ‘Stimmungslandschaft’. His new collection of contemporary landscape paintings explores our emotional relationship with nature and the quiet moments of reflection that landscapes can inspire.

This film is the second in our short series of conversations with Daniel, where he talks about the ideas behind this body of work, his painting practice, and the inspiration for Stimmungslandschaft.
The title Stimmungslandschaft comes from 19th-century German Romanticism and translates as 'Mood Landscape'. Closely associated with the work of Caspar David Friedrich, the term describes landscapes that evoke feeling as much as they depict place. Often featuring a solitary figure looking out across the landscape, these paintings invite us to slow down, reflect, and consider our own connection with the natural world.

Stimmungslandschaft opens on Thursday 3 September and runs until Saturday 26 September at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, Oxford

David Rhys Jones | Enamel Sculptures

David Rhys Jones creates sculptural works that interpret types of ancient artistic practices in a contemporary form.

He says, ‘A few years ago I acquired a collection of antique engravings - mostly 18th century, and many of them depicting scenes of Oxford.

Around the same time, I learned the ancient art of enamelling - cousin of ceramics - using the heat of a kiln to form a thin layer of pigmented glass onto metal.

Taking small details from the engravings, I have used them to create artworks - playing with colour and structural forms to make work that is architectural and contemporary. By using different colours, some of the work has an echo of stained glass and I hope that the resulting work gives new life to the antique engravings.’

We also have the A/P editions of ‘The Hidden Tree’, a sculptural form that sold out in the Royal Academy Summer Show 2025, and ‘The White Tree’ in the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition 2026.

August Highlights

Currently on show in the gallery we have new collections by Bee Bartlett, Maxine Gregson & Charlie O'Sullivan

These three artist explore narratives within the landscape, with rich storytelling, travel memories and imagined futures each in their own unique style.

Oxford artist Bee Bartlett has delved deep into her travel sketch books to revisit favourite places, Venice and Crete.

Printmaker Maxine Gregson creates collaged screenprints with a retro aesthetic, layering imagery from vintage photography, typography and grid lines to form compositions that nod to both the past and future.

Charlie O’Sullivan’s immersive works explore the interplay between time, place and memory. Charlie’s approach combines careful observation with a playful style, creating dreamlike landscapes of her imagination.
