Artist Spotlight: Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan () 🦊

Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan is a self-taught artist based in rural Devon. Her vibrant acrylic paintings are inspired by both local wildlife and also her own pets. Her close observation of nature influences her artistic exploration of the individuality of each animal.

At the heart of all Kelly’s art there is also an appreciation for the whimsical and absurd, and a keen insight into the human and animal condition.

Kelly’s ‘Medieval Subplot’ series is a highlight of this year’s Winter Exhibition at Iona House Gallery, where bird duos are dressed in medieval attire against backdrops that hint at tales of intrigue and identity. Featuring works entitled ‘The Vain Optician and the Wheelbearer’ and ‘The Secret Keeper and the Tale Teller’, the series transcends whimsy and folklore by engaging with themes of persona and hidden narratives. The medieval settings and attire add a historical pastiche that enriches the storytelling, turning each piece into a contemporary and humorous reimagining of a bygone era.

Alongside these narrative-rich pieces, Kelly presents a collection of dreamlike hare paintings, undoubtedly inspired by the countryside around her.

For over two decades in Walthamstow, London, Charlotte Gerrard has been creating her colourful and humorous works, immersed in the spirited hues and resonant narratives of the natural world.  Her pieces strike a chord of Warhol-esque irreverence whilst simultaneously flaunting a unique, personal touch. 🖌️

Charlotte has an affinity with animals, whether conveying the elegance of runner ducks, the proud and stately stance of mallard ducks or the spiritual confidence imbued in holy Indian cows. Her birds and animals have distinct personalities, almost humanised by depicting them wearing crowns or painted in a kaleidoscope of colours. Gold paint and opulent frames give them gravitas and presence, as seen in old master portraits, amplifying their importance. In addition, textural patterning, the use of ‘rangoli’ and sari patch borders, convey narratives of travel, partnership and homage to the cultures that inspire her work.

Gerrard’s partnership with TOLFA in Rajasthan and other local charities reflects a philanthropic approach to art, where a segment of the profits aids the rescue and rehabilitation of the very subjects that grace the canvases. The artist embraces public art and community initiatives, including a decade-long artist-in-residence role for a London Community Association and educational work in schools and galleries. These ventures are extensions of the artist's belief in the power of art to instigate change and foster environmental awareness.

A collection of Charlotte Gerrard’s work is currently on display at Iona House Gallery as part of our ‘Vision’ exhibition. The exhibition is on show until 3rd December. Be sure to visit the gallery in Woodstock, open 7 days a week to view this wonderful work. ✨

Currently on display as part of our 'Vision' exhibition is 'Call to the Wild' by Toby West. 🐆

Now living in Wimbledon, West has developed a distinct style in depicting wildlife. He frequently uses soft pastels to capture the subtle textures and vivid life force of his subjects. The leopard in 'Call to the Wild' is more than a static image; it dynamically embodies instinct and elegance. Its gaze and open maw are silent yet powerful expressions of the wild's enduring call. The artwork transports us to a world of beauty and survival, using a medium that offers both delicacy and intensity.

As a focal point of the 'Vision' exhibition, this piece embodies the show's theme by depicting the animal in a raw, almost tangible form. Toby West's work here transcends aesthetic appeal; it invites deeper reflection on the wild's intrinsic beauty and power. His artistry fosters a thoughtful engagement with the natural world, showcasing his deep understanding of the creatures he so meticulously portrays.

Join us Iona House Gallery to see ‘Call to the Wild in Person’. The exhibition runs until 3rd September and the gallery is open 7 days a week.

English artist is celebrated for capturing the essence of her subjects. Her paintings are characterised by their elegance and simplicity, illuminating the subtleties of everyday life, elevating and celebrating them. Through her use of bold colours and distilled forms, Dunbar's practice exudes a sense of straightforwardness and sophistication.

Emma is inspired by vibrant colours and the decorative allure of commonplace items. Her artistry often juxtaposes these items against recognisable landscapes and landmarks, featuring elements such as birds, shells and flowers as focal points.

Her painting practice has been enriched by her travels in India, leisurely holidays throughout the UK and even unpredictable moments such as the playful interruptions by cats or children on her wet canvases. Moreover, the influences of renowned artists like Mary Fedden, Milton Avery and Daphne McClure are evident in her work.

Instead of a strict representation, Emma aims to encapsulate a particular atmosphere or essence, weaving together fragments of journeys, familiar patterns and cherished objects into artworks that reverberate with the depth of her inspirations.

Emma primarily works with acrylic on board, but occasionally experiments with collage, often adding touches of gold and silver leaf. Her foundational skills in printmaking are evident in her approach, especially her technique of employing flat colour blocks and revealing underlying hues by etching through the top layers.

Dunbar was born in 1961.  She completed her BA(Hons) in Fine Art Printmaking from West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1984 and has since exhibited globally. As part of our Autumn Exhibition, we are showcasing a curated display of her latest work. Join us at Iona House Gallery in Woodstock to experience it in person.

Artist Spotlight: Mike Hall ✨

Mike Hall's artistic career commenced in interior and set design for both film and television. His skills ranged from designing sets for period dramas, to working as an Art Director for major production companies, showcasing a sensitivity for the dramatic and atmospheric. It wasn't until 1999 that he became a full-time artist.

Attracted by numerous landscapes, from the harbours of the East Coast of Scotland to the medieval villages of France, Hall's work focuses more on capturing atmosphere rather than achieving geographical accuracy. For him the time of day and quality of light play pivotal roles. These elements enable him to depict the cottages of Polperro Harbour in varying shades of blue and grey, as well as capture the pink granite houses of North Berwick, glowing in the twilight.

Hall's technique is a meticulous blend of planning and instinct. He uses thin layers of acrylic paint and employs translucent, broken colour to illustrate the glow and atmosphere of his subjects. Although he may complete the actual painting in just a few hours, much of his time is devoted to planning, sketching and resolving challenges related to light and composition.

Today, Mike Hall's paintings are sought after by collectors worldwide, a testament to his unique ability to distil the essence of a location into sensitive and atmospheric works of art.

From his subtle blend of interiors and exteriors featured in ‘Argenton’ and ‘Elevenses,’ to the tranquil outdoor scenes depicted in ‘Tall Daisies’ and ‘Lunch in the Garden,’ a selection of Mike's paintings can be viewed within our current Summer Exhibition.

Artist Spotlight: 🖌

Penny German is a contemporary artist based in Northamptonshire, who is renowned for her still life oils.

Initially specialising in botanical illustration in watercolour, Penny worked on various projects for the Royal Horticultural Society and Oxford University Press until ten years ago, when she discovered a love of oil painting. Now a full-time artist, Penny seeks to explore the effect of light in still life scenes and portraiture.

Penny's extensive travels have taken her to many parts of the world, immersing her in diverse cultures and landscapes that provide ample inspiration for her art. Along the way, she has collaborated with, and exhibited alongside, many talented artists discovering new approaches and techniques that continue to shape her practice. Despite her globe-trotting adventures, Penny holds a deep affection for her Northamptonshire home.

For many years Penny has devoted herself to creating daily oil sketches, inspired by the global sensation of ‘daily painting’. What initially started as a personal exercise to track her technical progress as an artist has since gained momentum, and now her daily paintings are sought after by art collectors worldwide.

Penny is an active member of the Chelsea Art Society, the Northampton Town and County Art Society, and the RBSA. Her works have been exhibited at renowned venues including the Mall Galleries and Chelsea Town Hall. She is also a founding member of Floris Fine Art, a collective of talented floral oil painters. Penny is passionate about sharing her knowledge and skills with others and takes pleasure in running workshops, painting holidays and giving demonstrations to art groups. She is a regular contributor to The Artist magazine and has judged paint-outs and exhibitions.

A selection of Penny's still life paintings are currently on display Iona House Gallery as part of our Winter Exhibition. We invite you to visit the gallery in Woodstock to see her wonderful paintings in person. All of the available paintings can also be viewed and purchased on our website.
