The Museum in the Park is set in Stratford Park in the centre of Stroud, Gloucestershire. The Museum is housed on two floors in a Grade II 17th century wool merchant's mansion. Objects and colourful displays combined with exciting events combine to celebrate the rich history and heritage of the Stroud District. The modern extension houses temporary exhibitions and visitor facilities. We welcome fa

milies and children with something to offer visitors of all ages. Whether you are visiting the District or have lived here for many years, you are sure to find something that interests, inspires or amazes you. We also offer a small gift shop and café within the museum foyer.

Last chance to see!

Don’t miss a last chance to experience the wonderful wood engravings on display at The Museum in the Park’s Gallery. The Society of Wood Engravers annual exhibition shows here until 21 June, with a Gallery Late to enjoy on 18 June (7-9pm) and two demo events with talented local artists Peter Collins (13 June) and Ray Hedger (21 June) – a chance to see this incredible art form in action.

Every image here has been engraved by hand, line by line, into the end grain of wood, a process that demands patience, precision, and creative vision in equal measure. It is a slow and thoughtful practice, and perhaps that is part of its enduring power in such a fast-moving world.”

Slow down, take your time and look closely - step nearer, step back again - and allow the details to reveal themselves gradually. You may find that the longer you look, the more these engravings begin to speak. Many thanks go to all the artists and organisers who have made it possible to show this special exhibition in Stroud – we are honoured indeed to be one of the 2026 national tour venues.

Luke Sherlock has a passion for sharing hidden stories from these extraordinary buildings and has spent years travelling the length and breadth of England. He joins Jo Durrant to reveal some remarkable architectural gems and forgotten tales from these atmospheric places.

Mammoth and Woolly Rhino have decided to retire from their jobs as museum security guards and have left us for pastures new. We thank them for their service and wish them well for the future – they will be putting in an appearance at Nailsworth Library over the summer as part of the Library Reading Challenge.
Here they are saying goodbye to relatives in the Geology gallery before heading off for a well-earned holiday. We have appointed a new and even more fearsome security guard who will be joining us before the summer holidays – watch this space.

The Pickwick Papers - Open Air Theatre by Rain or Shine

Calling all theatre lovers and garden lovers! Come along to the Museum on Saturday for an outdoor theatre adventure with Rain or Shine Theatre Co in our gorgeous Walled Garden. Show starts at 5.30pm and tickets are available to buy on the door… so why not pack a picnic and your all-weather gear and join us for some Summer entertainment!

Our summer theatre series opens with the delightfully chaotic Victorian world of The Pickwick Papers, where misadventure and merriment collide in a whirlwind of Dickensian absurdity!

Join the lovable Mr. Pickwick and his eccentric band of companions as they bumble their way through confusing courtships, courtroom shenanigans, questionable duels, and carriage rides gone terribly wrong. Expect fast-paced wit, slapstick, more multi-rolling mayhem, and a cast of larger-than-life characters in this brand new and hilarious adaptation.

Dickens has never been this delightfully unpredictable! Secure your seat, pack your picnic and prepare for an uproarious adventure with the Pickwick Society—where the only certainty is a thoroughly good time to be had by all!

Outdoor theatre show - please bring rugs or camping chairs to sit on and clothing to suit all weathers! Picnics welcome. Sorry, no dogs allowed (only service dogs).

The Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) represents an international group of artists who produce prints using the relief printing technique known as wood engraving.

The Annual Exhibition features original prints which are stringently selected from an open submission. It tours several venues across the country throughout the year showcasing the best contemporary work from the United Kingdom and overseas.

The Society works closely with each gallery venue to ensure people throughout the UK have the opportunity to experience the work at first hand. All work is for sale.

We are delighted to welcome back this prestigious exhibition and hope you enjoy this fine and inspiring selection of intricate and varied works. Look out for pop up ‘Meet the Artist’ events and demonstrations - a chance to watch the fascinating process of wood engraving in action.
