de Havilland Aircraft Museum

de Havilland Aircraft Museum Welcome to Britain's first aviation museum, dedicated to preserving de Havilland aircraft.
(329)

The museum is staffed almost entirely by volunteers and were recently presented with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE. Many volunteers are actively restoring iconic de Havilland aircraft including the Tiger Moth, Mosquito and Comet jetliner. The new Geoffrey de Havilland hanger was opened in 2019 and current projects include an exhibition dedicated to Cold War aviation as well as a Mosquito wartime flight simulator experience.

Bernie Vincent (left) and Martin Bull (right) reflect on their restoration of the de Havilland Aircraft Museum's Airspeed Horsa glider.

“It is a challenging project, especially as the correct grade of plywood is both expensive and difficult to source”

This particular cockpit was built during WW2 at the H. H. Martyn factory at Sunningend in Cheltenham. With the prototype Horsa glider being designed and constructed on the Salisbury Hall site. The museum plays an important part in the Horsa’s history.

Over 3800 Horsas were made and used for invasion assaults, most famously at D-Day and Arnhem in 1944.

Why not come along to the Museum and see our Horsa and the rest of our wonderful collection of aircraft.

We are open Tuesday - Sunday from 10:30 - 17:00 (last entry at 16:00)

It’s National Volunteers Week!

We Value our Volunteers at The de Havilland Aircraft Museum and so we celebrate this week with others that give their time, their knowledge and their dedication.

Without them, the day-to-day running just wouldn't happen.

Invaluable Volunteers We Value.

So we say a massive Thank You to our volunteers here at the museum as we would not be here if it was not for them!

Councillor Alpha Bird Collins, Mayor of Hertsmere, and his wife the Mayoress recently toured the de Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney.

The tour was an opportunity for Cllr Collins to thank the Museum for its support of his ‘aviation themed’ Civic Awards Dinner. Trustees had loaned several items to decorate the venue.

The visitors were able to closely inspect the prototype Mosquito. This was designed and built in upmost secrecy at the site of the Museum in 1939-40.

Cllr Collins later occupied the pilot’s seat of the award-winning Mosquito FB.VI, as Museum volunteer Craig McCallum explained the cockpit’s controls and features.

Having seen a demonstration of the Mosquito’s Merlin engine, the visitors were then shown the interior of the Comet 1, the world’s first commercial jet airliner.

Cllr Collins has now stepped down as Mayor as of the 20th May

Our thanks goes to both Cllr Collins and his wife for their time and their visit to the museum.
