Look closely at the St Albans pilgrim badge in our Timeline Gallery and you'll see St Alban on the right (with his head cut off) and the knight executioner on the left holding his eyes (to stop them falling out), with a sword between them, and trees around the scene.

Happy Mosaic Monday!

Discovered in the 1930s, with a tree growing on top of it, the "shell" mosaic is one of the highlights of the Verulamium Museum collection.

The mosaic dates back to AD150 and may have been in an apse (or bay window) area in an important room in a townhouse.
