The Appian Way, or Via Appia, was one of the most important roads ever built by the Roman Republic. Construction began in 312 BC under the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, originally linking Rome with Capua before being extended farther south toward Brundisium, modern Brindisi.

The road became a crucial military and commercial artery, allowing Roman armies, officials, merchants and travelers to move quickly across southern Italy.

Its construction was remarkably sophisticated. Roman engineers dug down to create a stable foundation, added layers of stone and gravel for drainage, and finished important sections with large fitted paving stones.

More than 2,300 years later, portions of the original route still survive. Some stretches near Rome can still be walked, cycled and, in certain sections, driven on, although the modern road network has replaced much of its ancient traffic function.

The Appian Way was so important to Rome that the poet Statius famously referred to it as the “queen of roads.” It also became lined with tombs and monuments because Roman law generally prohibited burials inside the city walls.

Added Fact: In 2024, the Via Appia was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, recognizing the extraordinary survival and influence of Rome’s ancient road system.
