All the metals are represented in The Art of Wonder gallery at the moment. Come and immerse yourself in art, enjoy messing about with magnets, and metallic sounds - and appreciate the qualities of metal, always beautiful, whether shiny and new or old and tarnished. We also have a metals wordsearch to enjoy with a cuppa in, or a prize metal-themed quiz to take out.

Blacksmith Son of Fire prepares to swing his hammer at our 2-hour metalworking workshop on Sunday 6th September. If you would like to learn about the annealing process and how textures are made in copper and aluminium, follow the link in our bio or pop into the gallery to sign up. The cost of the workshop is £18 which includes materials and attendees will come away with a finished piece of jewellery. Examples of artworks forged, beaten, embossed and woven into metals of various kinds by Island artists are available to look at and buy at The Art of Wonder. Come and be inspired.

A landmark album from the ‘70s in a cool Metal Box from Public Image Limited and some Metal, Bachman-Turner Overdrive-style are among the finds at The Art of Wonder during our metals theme. We also have beautiful artworks including finely embossed, crocheted, woven and beaten copper and aluminium and some forged iron hot from the blacksmith’s workshop. Our blacksmith is James Miller and he will be teaching a workshop at The Art of Wonder on Sunday 6 September. We hope to have a signup form and further details up on our website tomorrow (Tuesday) when we will post a link here.

We love the way that Lucy casts changing shadows. Here she seems to have written her own name onto the wall. She is, after all Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and was initially created by blacksmith James Miller aka Son of Fire as a tribute to the Beatles for a venue at the Isle of Wight Festival. There light was shone through her curves and curls to spectacular effect. She is now on display in our gallery and she is for sale during our Metalworking theme over the next couple of weeks. Look out too for details of a metalworking workshop on Sunday 6th September and swipe across for a view of James busy in his own blacksmith’s workshop.

Grids seem to be a theme within our new theme of The Art of Metalworking. Lyndy Moles’ sketchbooks are full of plottings and calculations, and the resulting artworks often combine the wild and beautiful with cutting-edge technology. In our new display Lyndy shows a series of large and small works in embossed aluminium and copper. Ulrike Schmoranzer too has used iron grids to contain the wild abandon of her Sextet and Triplet rust prints, set against the curling latticework of blacksmith James Miller’s organic barrier design currently installed in our window. We also have delicate crocheted and woven sculptures and jewellery by Elizabeth Hodgson to complete the amalgamation.

An informal, informative and entertaining afternoon “In Conversation with Des Pawson” in which the authority on all things knotty and ropey shares his craftsmanship and knowledge - Sunday 23 August, 2:30pm at The Art of Wonder.
