Local author Eric Ferris has turned up right on time for our ongoing Metals theme (fer being French for iron, and the whole name having connotations more in keeping with the upcoming feast of Halloween), with a gripping new publication The Valley of the Shadow. The new book is not only beautifully produced and full of compelling stories, art and spooky biographical snippets, but also comes in its own stylish carrier bag, with a pen and bookmark to complete the package - a treat as the evenings draw in towards Halloween. Awakening - a play of the light. A car door opening cast a momentary reflection of light against the wall of the shop opposite where a jumble of metal creatures rested peacefully on a shelf. As the light hit them they stirred and the shadows they cast on the wall behind them wavered into life and took a few tentative steps before the driver got out the car and slammed his door shut and they returned to their slumbers. But we, at The Art of Wonder, had glimpsed this awakening and held our breath. Could we make this phenomenon happen again? Ulrike shone her phone torch and, sure enough, the shadow creatures began a slow crawl along the wall. This reel was the result of a spontaneous collaboration between Rosemary, Ulrike and Jonathan who was quietly playing Grieg’s Morning from the Peer Gynt suite in the background, a wonderful accompaniment to this awakening of the spoon roaches which unfortunately hasn’t made it into the reel but made the happening all the more magical. Thanks to for her help in capturing this lovely moment and to Steve Hillier, maker of the metal minibeasts.
