Another new one for the series. 36 x 24 inches on canvas. Here's the caption:
Mid Atlantic Dawn
Upon hearing the news that Admiral Villeneuve and his squadron had headed across the Atlantic to the West Indies, Nelson, in HMS Victory, set off in pursuit early in June, 1805, in the hope of engaging the French there, thus preventing them from combining with the Spanish fleet that were blockaded in Cadiz. Nelson’s squadron comprised the 74-gun Amazon, Swiftsure, Belleisle, Canopus, Conqueror, Donegal, Leviathan, Superb, Spencer and Tigre, plus the smaller Amphion (32) and Décade (36). The chase to Barbados and back was HMS Victory’s only crossing of the Atlantic and proved fruitless, as Villeneuve had already escaped, but this action laid the ground for the Battle of Trafalgar in October of the same year.

Every now and then, It's lovely to set aside all the commissioned work, the researches and customer demands and just paint something for the fun of it. I really enjoyed crating this scene of a 74-gun ship of the line alongside with a bit of imbibing going on outside the tavern. Hope you like it. Acrylic on board, 20 x 10 inches.

So, following on from the black & white rough that I posted a while back, here is the much-modified final painting of HMS Speedy's successful duel with the much bigger el Gamo (full caption below). This illustrates the merit in sometimes preparing a small version first - to check angles, perspective and composition. There are many, many changes here, following a lot more research into the two ships involved in the skirmish. 36 x 24 inches on canvas. Hope you like it. Here's the caption:

HMS Speedy - Cochrane’s Action Against the Gamo

On 6 May 1801, HMS Speedy was cruising off the Spanish Coast when a large enemy frigate was sighted, a xebec-rigged vessel named Gamo, commanded by Don Francisco de Torres. Instead of evading the Spanish ship, which was carrying seven times the firepower of the tiny Speedy, Captain Thomas John Cochrane instead brought his ship so close to the Spanish frigate that the Spanish were unable to bring their guns to bear, whilst Speedy was able to fire repeatedly up through the Gamo’s hull and decks, de Torres being killed in the opening broadside. After repelling boarders, Cochrane despatched his entire crew, bar the ship’s doctor, to seize the Gamo and take her as a prize, tearing down the Spanish colours to convince her crew that she had struck and fallen to their tiny British opponent.

Every now and then, it is necessary to prepare a small black & white rough painting to whet a client's appetite or to establish the layout for his / her commission. I have just completed this little A4 acrylic which I hope will eventually be produced as a large, colour painting. This depicts what became known as Cochranes Action whereby the tiny HMS Speedy pitted herself against the much bigger Spanish Xebec frigate called el Gamo. Although the Gamo had over three times the firepower of the little HMS Speedy, Cochrane repeatedly manoeuvred his ship so close to the Gamo that the Spanish could not bring their guns to bear down enough to score any hits. Speedy, however, fired her guns up through the hull and decks of the Gamo, eventually forcing her to surrender and strike her colours.

Just completed the first epic of 2025 - The Battle of San Domingo, the Destruction of the Imperiale. 36 x 24 inches on canvas.

The painting shows the huge French 120-gun Imperiale totally destroyed by the efforts of HMS Superb, a 74-gun Third Rate, the flagship of Vice Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth. Both Imperiale and the French Diomede were eventually driven onto the rocks, where they remained until broken up. HMS Superb remained relatively unscathed. She is depicted delivering the final blows to the dismasted Imperiale while, in the background, HMS Agamemnon is engaging other French ships as she comes to the aid of Superb.

So, here is my latest Trafalgar epic. 36 x 24 inches on canvas. The caption reads:

Nerves of Steel
Just moments from her devastating opening broadside, HMS Victory prepares to pass the stern of the French flagship, Bucentaure, to break through the line of the combined French and Spanish fleets as the Battle of Trafalgar begins on 21st October 1805. Victory’s guns had remained silent until this moment, Lord Nelson’s flagship having already suffered severe damage during the approach, but now the gun crews awaited the moment when her double-shotted cannon, her mighty 68-pounder carronade and a shower of musket balls would smash through the French vessel, rendering it at once a useless hulk.
