Only one more week to see the stunning Alien Native installation in the main gallery.
Alien Native is a specially commissioned new artwork created by duo Heinrich & Palmer to celebrate the opening of Gosport Museum and Art Gallery. This video artwork is inspired both by plants growing locally in the Gosport area and Hampshire Cultural Trust’s herbarium collection, which includes botanical specimens dating as far back as the 18th century.
The exhibition explores Gosport’s non-native, or alien, plants, introduced by human activity, and their native counterparts, which are either indigenous species, or arrived ‘naturally’ in Britain and Ireland following the end of the Ice Age.
Together, the moving image and sound create an immersive and otherworldly experience not to be missed.

Today we are feeling very sad in the venue. On Saturday items in our very popular Play Gallery have been damaged.
The Play Gallery is a very busy space enjoyed by many young visitors a week. We have provided a free and safe space for the under 5s to explore and investigate colour, line, shape, and texture through sensory resources. There are a wide range of resources out for all interests.
We do ask that all visitors respect this space, play with what is out (not items in closed/locked cupboards which are for other events), refrain from eating and drinking (we have a lovely café area for this), and tidy up after exploring.
The team is very small and we do not have the capacity to man this space all the hours we are open. It would be sad for the young generation of Gosport to lose it.
Fostering Hampshire Children will be joining us next week offering free craft activities for families. Just come along to the Family Activity Room on Wednesday 15 February 10am-4pm and meet the Fostering Hampshire Team.
Are you looking for a venue for your child's birthday?
We are excited to announce Gosport Museum and Art Gallery is now offering Play Gallery Parties for the under 5s.

Today I attended the celebration of the life of Jack Poole who sadly passed away on 28 November at the age of 96 years. Jack volunteered at SEARCH and Gosport Museum on the Mezz from 2008. He was an amazing man who enthralled visitors with his stories and knowledge of Gosport's past.
Jack threw himself into his volunteering with us and was the star attraction at our SEARCH by torchlight events for several years when he would pose as a mannequin then suddenly move to the horror of visitors. His years in the Royal Marines helped him keep very still.
I had the honour of accompanying Jack to London in 2016 to receive a Churchill Award in recognition of his volunteering with us. Others receiving awards were celebrities such as Jacqueline Wilson, Barbara Windsor, and Angela Rippon. The award was presented by Esther Rantzem.
Jack was a true gentleman who will be missed by the Gosport team and the Gosport community
We are registered as a warm space.
Please pop in on a Friday 4pm-8pm.
