🎨 Coming Soon: An Exhibition of Pastels by Richard Marshall
We’re delighted to share a little preview of our forthcoming exhibition featuring Richard Marshall, a wonderful Sussex-based artist whose work is full of colour, texture, atmosphere and a real love of the painted image.
Richard has spent decades exploring the possibilities of pastel, oil, gouache and watercolour, creating landscapes, seascapes and still lifes that invite you to pause and really look.
A member of the Pastel Society since 1983, Richard has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, and his work is held in private collections across the UK, Europe and North America.
What makes Richard’s work particularly fascinating is the way each painting develops. Working mainly from life, he builds his images layer by layer, experimenting with colour, texture and materials. He often works on several paintings at once, allowing each one to evolve through observation, curiosity and constant reworking.
For Richard, a painting isn’t simply something that is finished, it grows through the process of making.

About Richard 🧑🎨
Born in Goring, West Sussex, in 1943, Richard studied Fine Art at West Sussex College of Art before continuing his studies under William Cartledge RI RSMA and Gyula Sajo, former Professor of Applied Art and Architecture at the Budapest Academy, Hungary. He was elected to the Pastel Society in 1983.
