It's museum mummy Sara with her Saturday work children. It was great to get a visit from former Retail and Admissions Assistant Brandon today, back from that big London town. Current post-holder Annie is off to uni soon, so we have a vacancy.

Picture yourself working with us? You've got until Monday to apply.

It was lovely to welcome Roy and Christine to the museum today. The siblings are just starting to research their father's army service. Hamilton Cambridge became a Prisoner of War in 1943 and Roy, who was born in 1939 and didn't meet his Dad until he was six, can remember the excitement he felt seeing him for the first time, returning from the war and stepping out of the taxi at their home in West Hartlepool. We hold Hamilton's Prisoner of War card in the museum archive and were able to share it with them.

It got emotional, especially when it was explained that one of the regimental family had agreed to cover the cost of welfare parcels sent to him. Christine will apply to the MOD for their father's service record, then use our research service to build a fuller picture of his time with the regiment.

Visitors reduced to tears? A strange benchmark to measure by, but for us it means things may, at last, be getting back to some kind of normality.

Private Lionel ‘Leo’ Robson, who died in September last year, will be remembered here at the museum, thanks to a generous donation by his family.

Leo’s daughters raised funds for a name plate in memory of their dad, who served with the Green Howards between 1961 and 1973. Their efforts to raise funds included raffling their fathers moped.

Leo served in Libya, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Canada, British Honduras, Germany and Northern Ireland. Joining the army had been a childhood dream; his pride in his service and his regiment was held dear for the rest of his life. Leo’s ashes were scattered, in accordance with his wishes, in Easingwold, Scarborough and in the Chaopraya River, Thailand.

Initially the name plaques were designed to go on the museum stairs as part of fundraising for our redevelopment in 2014. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve now run out of steps, so the plaques are now displayed on boards nearby. If you would like to remember someone connected to the regiment, with a plaque at the museum, or support us with a donation of any kind, find out how here: https://greenhowards.org.uk/join-in/donations/

Farewell shed. You did us proud, helping raise much-needed funds for the museum while we were closed. There was only one day where we couldn't open due to the weather in a whole five weeks of service. Not bad going. We've put away the cake stands, there's a museum to run! OPEN Mon to Sat 10am to 4.30pm. Book online now.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON is our special FREE exhibition celebrating the morale-boosting power of performance in difficult times. Even though the museum itself remains closed until next month, you can see the exhibits, including this programme from 1918, in our showcase on the way into the gift shop (open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday next week). We've been inspired by our friends at The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, North Yorkshire who have been working incredibly hard during lockdown to make improvements to their beautiful space in preparation for welcoming tour visitors and audiences once more. The show WILL go on!

Time for some thank yous. Setting up the shed would not have been possible without the support of Richmond Town Council Cross View Tea Rooms and the Friends of The Green Howards Museum. Thank Nick at Hunter's Landscapes Catterick for creating and donating such a solid base for our shed to sit on, and our museum team and volunteers for painting it, building it, baking for it and serving from it. Thanks to locals and visitors for popping by - we've already got some regulars which is brilliant. Thank you all! Shed customers get 10% off in the museum shop too.
