HE-HAW! he-haw! he-haw!
Have you ever wondered what life in the Green Howards looked like through a donkey's eyes?
Meet Anthony the Donkey.
Stationed in India in the early 1900s as part of the 2nd Battalion, Anthony reported his experiences in the Green Howards Gazette. His humorous accounts include his failed advances towards a female donkey who kicked him in the jaw bone and recollections of soldiers' activities.
A stalwart of the battalion, he participated in parades and marches and earned himself a reputation as a prankster: tugging men out of their beds, stealing food and soiling kit.
Loved by the entire battalion, his articles in the gazette came to an end in October 1901 when he died surrounded by his comrades. A soldier wrote in his obituary that the "men of the regiment will tell their children anecdotes of the pet donkey who was the admiration of all who beheld him."
Want to learn more about Anthony's regiment? Visit The Green Howards Museum Monday-Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm.
