Prestongrange Museum

Prestongrange Museum Prestongrange is a free open-air museum that tells 700 years of industrial heritage history. We serve hot and cold drinks as well as light refreshments.

Prestongrange is a free open- air museum - managed by East Lothian Council Museums - and a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a sixteenth-century harbour, a seventeenth-century glass works, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth-century coal mine and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can

still be seen, including the rare Hoffman Kiln built in 1937 and the Cornish Beam Engine, unique in Scotland as the only beam engine still on the site where it worked. Prestongrange is a family friendly site, with a dedicated play area located in the Visitor Centre, entertaining trailsheets and outdoor games with an open play area. Our cafe - the Pithead Canteen - is located in the Visitor Centre which once served as the miners’ canteen. We have a regular schedule of fun events and temporary exhibitions.

There'll also be non-craft table-top activities relating to Prestongrange, literature on the manufacturing here, and the opportunity to chat to our friendly staff about the site's industries. Something for everyone- see you there! 😀😀😀

Hello Prestongrange friends and followers, it's been great to welcome school visits in the last week. We have lots more booked in, and so will have a slightly reduced timetable for tours for the next few weeks. On Wednesdays, we will not be offering tours until Weds 17 June. On Thursday mornings, we will not be doing them until Thurs 11 June. We are still however running tours on Thursday afternoons (2pm), on Fridays and both weekend days (11.30 and 2pm). So hopefully people can find a slot that suits them. Many thanks for your cooperation- it's so important that local children can have these visits to find out about this amazing place on their doorstep!
