There are many, a great many, questions about early track. In particular, about the wheel: rail interface; about switches and crossings; and curves.

We know archaeologically how curves were laid out with a stone block railway - curves were polygonal, using staggered joints to try and create the inner and out radii. Staggered joints would, of course, help prevent 'track creep.'

But there's nothing in archive sources saying how they were built, and as far as I am aware, only one example of a stone block and cast-iron rail curve which has been examined archaeologically.

Wrought iron and stone block curves? Again, no idea. Likewise there's nothing describing how these railways were actually constructed. We know the stone blocks were pre-drilled before coming to site. But how was gauge measured? It's not like marking up a wooden sleeper to be able to drill it. Was one line of rails laid and that used as a datum to drag over another set of rails already mounted on their blocks? Because the blocks were irregular you couldn't use them as a datum point. Likewise the rebate and holes for the chair couldn't be used - there was no easy, standard point of measure. How was it done?

Wooden railways? We know how they were built - rather like a modern sleepered railway today. But how did they do curves? Were they like the cast-iron railways, polygonal? Very likely. It's very very doubtful the rails would have been steamed to shape, and unlikely sufficient crooked or naturally bent timber was available either. So it's likely curves were polygonal, or perhaps even avoided?

What about switches and crossings? The late Dr Michael Lewis in his paper presented at ER6 outlined the sum-total of knowledge about switches pre-1830. It's in fact very little. He presents three known archaeological examples of wooden switches, but crucially none of them have any moving parts, or none were recorded. So we don't know how they functioned. Archival sources? Basically nothing.

Iron and stone block points? Maybe on firmer ground from a documentary point of view, but from an archaeological point of view? Very little to go on. Some components survive, but it's piecing it all back together that's the problem.

So, in light of all of this, next week the 1722 Waggonway Project is going to try an ambitious piece of experimental archaeology. The group is going to extend their existing length of wooden track, and also build a switch. It is derived from as much data as can be gathered from archaeological reports and academic papers. It will have a single moving blade and a chord of 1:10. Once completed, the opportunity will be taken to run a replica waggon along the track to examine both the wheel: rail interface as well as how the waggon manages with turning through the switch in the facing and trailing direction. If there is time, the wheels of the waggon may be turned to cone their tread to explore the difference between a cylindrical wheel on a square rail and a coned wheel on a square rail.

Beamish did a very limited piece of experimental work with their wooden waggonway over a decade ago, but the results were not properly recorded or reported.

There's a lot of myth which has grown up around the 'invention' and adoption of what became known as 'Standard Gauge.' One of the most easily-disproved is that Geordie Stephenson went up to Hadrian's wall, measured the distance between the 'Roman Chariot Ruts' and Bob's your Aunty, 'Standard Gauge' (as it was termed after 1846) was adopted. It's clearly rubbish but a story one still sees perpetuated online, and I've even seen it in print!

What we know is, is that Stephenson didn't 'invent' the gauge of 4ft 8in: it was already in use at Killingworth Colliery. He was building his locomotives to fit the existing gauge.

But archaeological work in Wallsend in 2013 demonstrated that the 4ft 8in gauge pre-dated Killingworth, extending back to the mid-1780s being in use on the Willington Waggonway. Much was made of this as the 'oldest' 'Standard-Gauge' railway thus discovered, as being the progenitor perhaps - and one still sees that interpretation as well.

But history, and archaeology never stay still. History is always being re-written as new data, new interpretive frame works and 'what we thought we knew' is constantly being re-assessed. In 2025 archaeologists working in Cockenzie in East Lothian found that the Tranent-Cockenzie Waggonway of 1722, or at least the latter phase of it dating from the early 1770s had been built to a gauge of 4ft 8in. This raised the question of whether 'Standard Gauge' had moved north from England, or south from Scotland.

Even more recent - and yet to be published - archaeology from the other side of the Forth indicates the waggonway there was likely built to a gauge of 4ft 8in. It is attested to from documents as being in existence from 1771 to 1794. From it's short-life span it was likely single-phase. So again pushing back the use of 4ft 8in further back in time and also north of the border.

Another clue as to the origins of 4ft 8in gauge comes from road vehicles. In the 1760s Johannes Muller was lamenting the fact that most roads in Britain were narrow and gun carriages had a 'span' (i.e. gauge) of 4ft. He much preferred a wider span, recommending 4ft 8in or even 5ft because of the additional stability that offered. He also notes that there was no standard span for road vehicles around the country. In general, those in the north east had a wider span than those in the Midlands. This in itself is a fascinating observation as it maps onto the late Michael Lewis' observations about gauge being wider in the North East than in the Midlands. That in turn being linked to distances covered from pit to staithe.

What is certain, is that 'Standard Gauge' is certainly not a Stephenson invention although he popularised it. It is far older than Stephenson; older than the locomotive; and may, in fact, be the 'Scottish Gauge.'

What is really needed is a sustained campaign of archival research and archaeology, carried out by those with the skills and experience, on wooden railways to fully understand them. Dare I say it, on early iron railways too because there is so much which is unknown. Whilst Helen Gomersall's thought-provoking paper 'When to Stop Digging' presented at ER6 considers the bulk of evidence largely derived from 'rescue archaeology', it is clear that these structures deserve a sustained archaeological assessment; they are multi-phase often palimpsest structures which require time to unpick archaeologically and to interpret. Likewise, these data need combining with experimental work to further understand the formation process of what we see in the ground, but how they were made, used and performed as a guided routeway.

THE BIG REVEAL!
The end of a very hard weeks work, and we have found the waggonway at St Monans. As ever, there are many more questions, and the potential for future archaeology, but to find this waggonway is a major step forward in understanding the industrial landscape at St Monans.
