Coming Soon!
We’re in the middle of moving our website … and it’s a big job. Having reached 15,000 listings our old server finally crawled slowly to a complete standstill and died a happy death, overwhelmed with avant garde ephemera. We’re hoping to be up and running again in the next couple of days. We have the technology. We can make the website better than it was. Better, stronger, faster!

( And whilst we’re building, we’re still adding new listings, of course )

Ian Hamilton Finlay
Invite & Announcement Cards

IN WORLD WAR I, MANY SHIPS WERE SUNK BY SUBMARINES WHICH DISLIKED MODERN ART. 1977.
London: Serpentine Gallery, 1977 10.7 x 15cm, 4pp (single folded sheet). The announcement card for a major exhibition of Finlay’s work. The cover shows an abstract in red and blue and references the use of similar patterning on fleet ships during the war (called “dazzle boats”) : the joke of course is that this type of camouflage resembles hard-edge abstraction which was in vogue for the 60s and 70s and hence the “dislike” by the U-boats.

DON’T PUT ALL YOUR HEADS IN ONE BASKET”. 1988.
Edinburgh: National Galleries of Scotland, n.d. (1988) 10.5 x 15cm, 2pp. Announcement card with a work by Finlay from the group of works known as the “Picabia Series” - here ‘DON’T PUT ALL YOUR HEADS IN ONE BASKET”. The exhibition was of the work of the surrealist and dadaist Picabia but the museum decided to use Finlay’s work as publicity for the show (and the work was exhibited along side the various works from the turn of the century and 1920s.). One of three different cards issued at the same time.

10 MAQUETTES FOR NEO-CLASSICAL STRUCTURES. 1992.
London: Victoria Miro Gallery, 1992 22 x 15cm, 4pp , triangular shaped announcement card fpr an exhibition of small maquettes for sculptures. These small works are delights and one - Pyramid Beautiful Fanatical - is reproduced on the front (the card shape having been chosen to reflect the shape. The work probably references either Saint Just or Robespierre.

(These cards are part of our IHF collection and not available individually in our store. But we do sometimes have duplicates for sale - always worth a dm if you’re looking for something specific!)

Jørgen Nash, J V Martin
HANEGAL
(With chicken wire slipcase to contain the rooster within and also thwart the sandpaper of Jorn’s Memoires)

Paris: Edition Internationale Situationniste, 1961.
28 x 22cm. 34 pp. Original boards. Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour with original lithographs and various other designs by Martin. Pictorial paper over boards with a further design by Martin. Enclosed in a slipcase with the title hand stencilled in white (on black) and with an overlay of small-gauge chicken wire. First edition. One of 750 numbered examples (total edition) signed by Nash and Martin although this copy is additionally dedicated in hand above the signatures on the first page in a different colour ink by Nash to the fellow artist Johnny Skattberg and dated 1961. A striking collaborative work by the poet (Nash) and illustrator (Martin) which show the Cobra influence in Nash’s illustrations to Martin’s poems and evidence that Jorn was not the only artist of ability amongst the siblings when Nash was on form. Both Nash and Martin were major actors in the Situationist movement at the time of this publication and the hard-edged polemic of the work underscores this. Later the movement came to influence both the riots in Paris in 1968 but also the Punk sensibilities of detournment and cut ups – and Jamie Reid and Malcolm McLaren were both aware of both Memoires and Hanegal. A very good example of this rare book with a slight mark to the boards of the book and minor wear to the extremities of the black slipcase, both internal protecting cards are still present however which are usually missing from most copies and the chicken-wire is in perfect condition. Rare, for sale, dm for info.

Asger Jorn, Guy Debord
MÉMOIRES. STRUCTURES PORTANTES D’ASGER JORN. 1959. FIRST EDITION.
Copenhague, Internationale Situationniste, 1959.
27.7 x 21cm, 64pp plus wrappers. Original sandpaper dustwrappers as published. This is one of the most famous of artist’s books. Jorn and Debord created a number of collages which were later overpainted by Jorn and sprinkled with texts by Debord which tell the story of the International Situationists in a somewhat oblique manner. The final book then had an unprinted sandpaper dust jacket added to the publication which Debord thought would damage any other book placed beside Memoires on a bookcase.
This is in near mint condition with only a few slithers of the sandpaper coming away on the dustjacket on the bottom right of the front dj. For sale. Dm for info.

Every evening, this youth displays its contempt for Western values and its unhealthy sadness at “La Méthode”, de la rue Descartes”. The small leaflet promoted Debord and Bernstein ran for less than a month from 10 to 29 October 1958. VG+.
