AM FASGADH QUAICH – SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER

Our annual primary school shinty competition will be taking place next Saturday, on the 12th September, from 10.30am until midday.

Come down to support the young local players in the Am Fasgadh Quaich. There will be teams representing Newtonmore, Kingussie, Kincraig, Aviemore and Strathspey.

Badenoch Shinty Memories will be here on the day, and we’re thankful to the Camanachd Association for their help in preparing for the event.

It’s always a great morning, so do pop along and cheer on the young players!

AM FASGADH STORE TOURS

Our summer programme has now come to an end, and autumn is right around the corner.

Why not escape the colder weather every Wednesday, with our store tour? Led by our wonderful volunteers, you'll be treated to a look around our collection of over 15,000 objects, from tractors to sewing machines, to basketry and beyond.

The tour begins at 2pm in Am Fasgadh and can be booked in advance by calling 01349 781650 or emailing [email protected]. Alternatively, you can book in person at our reception when you arrive at the Museum.

No charge, but donations are welcome. We look forward to seeing you!

FINAL HERITAGE IN ACTION DAY FOR 2026

Tomorrow, 26th August, is our final Heritage in Action Day of the season!

Join us for one last day of traditional skills, crafts and activities taking place across the site. There’s plenty to see throughout the day, with our demonstrators bringing Highland history and heritage to life.

Elaine Lindsay of Something Corny will be demonstrating the traditional craft of corn dollies and hairst knots at the croft, from 11am–1pm and 1.30–3.30pm. Find out more about this dying craft, and try your hand at making one yourself! There will also be ropemaking, traditional games, spinning, and metalworking going on throughout the day, down at the croft. Well worth a visit.

The Camanachd Association will be returning to for shinty demonstrations from 11am–1pm and 2–4pm. Try your hand at the game, and learn more about the history.

Head up to the Township throughout the day to discover a variety of textile crafts, thatching and pole lathe demonstrations, or stop by the curling pond to see our coracles. The Badenoch waulking group will be at the church from 1pm-3pm.

The collections store at Am Fasgadh will also be open from 2pm, with last entry at 3.15pm. 15,000 objects to explore, made possible by our wonderful volunteers!

HERITAGE CRAFT IN ACTION!

For our last Heritage in Action day next Wednesday (26th August), we’re delighted to be joined by Elaine Lindsay , who will be demonstrating straw-working and corn dolly making.

During the day Elaine will be demonstrating and chatting about Hairst (harvest knots), what they were, and why and how they were made.

Visitors are invited to make their own Hairst Knot to take away with them. It’s a great souvenir from your visit to the museum, and a wonderful chance to learn about this rural craft and try it out for yourself.

We’ll also have rope making, coracles, spinning, textiles crafts, thatching, waulking the cloth, and shinty demos happening across the site on Wednesday! Don’t miss your last chance of the summer to come along and take part.

AM FASGADH QUAICH & DOORS OPEN DAY

On Saturday the 12th of September we'll have our annual primary school shinty competition, and our stores will be open for Doors Open day!

Am Fasgadh Quaich - 10:30am to Midday
Come down to support the young local players; there will be teams representing Newtonmore, Kingussie, Kincraig, Aviemore and Strathspey.
It’s always a great morning, so do pop along and cheer on the young players.

Doors Open Day - Midday to 4pm
Step inside to explore the thousands of objects in the museum’s permanent collection, which was started in the 1930s by our founder Dr Isabel Grant and has been added to over the decades since.
We’ll have staff and volunteers on hand to highlight our star items and answer your questions.
No need to book, just come along and take your time in having a look around, we will be closing at 4pm.
No entry charge but as a charitable organisation, donations are welcomed.

HERITAGE IN ACTION DAY THIS WEDNESDAY

It's another week, and another Heritage in Action Day. Come along on Wednesday 19th August for a great day out!

From 11am-4pm, join the Camanachd Association for a shinty demonstration. Learn all about this beloved Highland sport, and try your hand at the game! Flying shinty balls, beware!

Local fiddle player, Helen Armour, will be joining us again to perform some traditional Scottish folk tunes in the Church from 11am-12.30pm. Helen will be followed by the Badenoch waulking group, from 1pm-3pm; learn about the waulking process, and listen to some lovely Gaelic tunes.

The Insh Coracle Group will be based at the Curling Pond all day. Try your hand at coracling, and learn more about these interesting little boats.

From 2pm you can visit our museum collections store, Am Fasgadh, (last admission 3.15pm) for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum's fascinating collections.

Across the site, you'll find plenty of other traditional crafts and demonstrations to enjoy, including textile crafts and thatching in the Township, rope-making and wool spinning in the Croft and metal working in the Smiddy.

All activities are drop-in, so there's no need to book.

HERITAGE IN ACTION DAY THIS WEDNESDAY

Come along to the museum on Wednesday 12th August for a fun day out for all the family!

This week we’ll be joined by the Highland Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers from 11am until 3.30pm at the Shinty Pavilion, where you can try out weaving and other textile crafts.

Join us tomorrow for another Heritage in Action Day at the Highland Folk Museum!

The forecast may be a little wetter this week, but there's still plenty to enjoy across the museum. Pack your waterproofs and come along to discover some traditional Highland skills, and family-friendly activities.

Visit the Camanachd Association at our shinty pitch. Have a go with a caman, learn all about shinty and the history of this iconic Highland game.

Head to the Pinewoods to meet Saranne, a countryside ranger, and discover more about the wildlife that calls the museum home from 11am to 2pm. You'll also find the Saving Wildcats team there with fun, hands-on activities, from 11am to 3pm.

Across the site, you'll also find plenty of traditional crafts and demonstrations to enjoy, including textile crafts in the Township, rope-making in the Croft, and waulking the cloth at the church from 1pm–3pm.

If you're looking to stay dry for a while, don't forget you can step inside our museum collections store, Am Fasgadh, from 2pm (last admission 3.15pm) for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum's fascinating collections.
