The Clan Macpherson Museum in Newtonmore tells the story of the Clan and its people, from early Highland history to the present day. First opened in 1952, the Museum brings together a wide-ranging collection that reflects generations of Clan Macpherson, along with the wider influence of its people across the military, the arts, sport and community life. The collection explores the story of Cluny o

f the ‘45 and the Jacobite period, alongside music, poetry and oral storytelling. Portraits, historic items and personal belongings help illustrate the lives of the Clan over time. Highlights include the fiddle of outlaw James (‘Jamie’) Macpherson, linked to the origins of Strathspey music and remembered through the story of Macpherson’s Lament. Located in the heart of Badenoch, the Museum is family-friendly, dog-friendly, and aims to be accessible to all visitors. Entry is free, and donations are warmly welcomed.

Lachlan Macpherson of Nuide and Cluny became the 17th Chief in 1722.

This portrait was purchased at the Cluny Castle sale in 1943 and later restored, thanks to the generous support of Museums Galleries Scotland 🖼️
