R.I.P. Dolly Parton

An American singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman and someone that when times are tough, I think "what would Dolly do". If you have only listened to her music Google her and see all the wonderful things she did and what she achieved and overcame.

I've had a break from social media, the shops been open as normal but I had a tough start to the year with my health and then it got worse. And tbh I had a massive wobble with a cancer scare and it completely threw me. Add in the joys of menopause, being self employed and running a shop and the death of someone I hadn't realised how much a part of my life he was. I withdrew from everyone and everything, I missed nights out, events, being a god parent, I've never known anything quite like it. And I needed a break from posting.

I've had some more interesting diagnosis lately which explains a lot and with time, hopefully meds and coping strategies in place things will be smoother. But Sally (the old lady that sells old stuff in the shop down from me!!!) at one point said what you got to be so sad about. And do you know what I realised I hadn't been concentrating on what I have got. I also had a customer come in today who said you've got my dream job. My first response was if only you knew, again not thinking of the positives. So what would Dolly do? Pick herself up, put her cowboy boots on (for me that's big knickers and red footwear) and sing. That's what I will do. And knit.

Here's to the start of more regular posts, thanks Dolly ❤️

Today BethanDesigns celebrates the life of her wonderful dad, John. I had the pleasure of meeting him (and him fixing my car!) and after meeting both him and her mum understand completely where Beth gets her bubbly, kindness and humour from along with the batsh*t crazy!!!! Just wanted to pass my sincere condolences and thoughts to you all. I'm sorry I can't be with you today but know there will be a packed church and pub as you all gather to celebrate and remember him.

Look who just arrived from Cornwall!!!

I have 7 beautiful booted mice although scandalously some are bare foot!!!! One is hunched because I think he's cold from his journey, one has a hat and scarf, another a bow in her hair and one with glasses!!!

There's 12 tin sleeping baby mice all with positive quotes in the tin so perfect if someone needs a pocket calming reminder or just a real sweet gift.

These are all handmade by who has family links to the mill! I love it when chatting to customers turns into mice deliveries!!!!

All this and more in the shop full of colour and creativity up the yard at Cromford Mills in Derbyshire. Open every day 10.30-4.30

This happened today. Clementine made it to the mill. My plan to drive her to work is not quite there yet, my legs are too long and I can't comfortably or safely drive her. I drove her down the yard after we bump started her.... And my knees still hurt. But it's getting closer, he's working really hard on her. She's beautiful though and is very loud and stinky!!

Day 4 of My Shop Life prompts is throwback and I love this one. When you are knee/neck deep in running a shop you very rarely have the chance to stop and look back. I'm lucky because I now build time into my business to have a deep dive and look back and make changes and use my accounts properly and see what's working. But I very rarely appreciate the changes and how far I've come. It was a massive risk and a huge leap opening up here. What I wanted and what I got was very different and financially a big gap too. Not everyone was supportive, interesting when people say why and that I proved them wrong. But there's been so much hard work and unpaid time, heart ache and tears and not to mention friendships that went t**s up and people's bad behaviour. Lots go on behind the scenes that I don't talk about and so many sleepless nights when you just think you can't do it anymore. But I put my big girl pants on, grit my teeth and open the doors.

I'm doing these amazing prompts a week late as life happened and I just didn't have the headspace to do it last week. And I'm learning that's okay. My health took priority, this time last week was my first day back in the shop and so far I'm still here and I intend on the shop growing and evolving.. ...

Day 2 of by Sarah is the team and this is the current one.

Karen works Wednesday and Fridays and is also the maker behind she is a black belt in karate, loves lasagne and collects craft compendiums and is soooo polite and nice!

Ben works weekends and when I'm ill and is my first born child and sneak peek at what he's just started making!!! He loves noodles and is scared of chickens (me and Poppy still laugh at the memory of him running for his life from my tiny dinosaurs) and is not a hand knitter.

Archie is the computer website boy and epos sorter outer. He very patiently goes through the same thing over and over until it clicks and has taken to making videos to help me remember what to do! He loves yoghurt, has taken up running and can not knit.

Sarah is me and I get bored easily so get distracted and never finish things, although I will share later on this week the beautiful bridal cardigan I made as I'm so proud. I love chocolate and the sea and I'm also known as Sarah Chicken but recently have been answering to the name Sally!!!! Sometimes I get bogged down by the crap in life but luckily have this amazing shop I created and spending time in it helps ground you.

There's also my husband in the background that helps bring practical ideas to life and Kalpna is still selling and part of the in case of an emergency stand in shop staff!

These people allow me to do the shop and I'm very grateful and glad that they are around.

Day 1 of My Shop Life is shop front and this is what it looks like today! I am in year 8 of being up the yard at Cromford Mills and it's interesting. I am based within the site of a listed historical mill so therefore really restricted on what can do but on the flip side it is a beautiful setting. I opened primarily as a space to do workshops in as was fed up of moving equipment around and it was hard not having a regular base especially when you regularly booked somewhere.

Over the past 7/8 years I've had to adapt and there's been lots of changes in the shop layout. I currently rent out a studio space directly above the shop for workshops and for me to work in, I also hire the space out to other artists and makers and it's where the weekly knit club is held although we are getting close to being outside again.

The shop is open every day 10.30 - 4 30 and you can find me up the yard at Cromford Mills in Derbyshire.

is a week long social media celebration of shops organised by Sarah from and is a great chance for you to find some new amazing independent shops. Full disclosure it was last week but I was busy and distracted with hospital appointments, operations and scary health stuff but I participate every year and needed to take part but just didn't have the headspace. I'm not out the woods but have got my head round it and means a week late is better than never!!!
