For every pound we take 20% is handed over as VAT, that's not on profit (there's corporation tax on top for that).
When we became VAT registered we absorbed most of it ourselves in keeping prices more or less unchanged as we want to keep Blah accessible - Don't believe what they tell you, a pint isn't a special treat, it's a working class tradition, it's not a three course meal, it's socialising with your friends at your local. This does however mean our margins are ridiculously small and unless we're busy every single night the sums don't add up.
Business rate reduction does nothing for us and many other small businesses. It looked like a catchy headline that would swoop in and help hospitality but, in reality the bigger and more profitable the premises the higher the rateable value, meaning basically the bigger you are and the more premises you own the more you'll save! VAT however does affect everyone equally.
This really would give us a chance at longevity, not a chance at profit. It means we can carry on being affordable, keep free hire for gigs and maybe even give the staff a few more hours! We can keep supporting the people and the community were here for - which was the point in Blah existing in the first place!
