10 October 2006 - The first Arctic Emblems were presented to veterans as a mark of hardship on the Arctic Convoys in World War Two, between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945.

Awarded for serving in Russia or Norway, the emblem commemorates those who served in the Arctic in especially dangerous and extreme weather conditions against German forces.

The one pictured here (attached second on the left) was awarded to Charles Joseph Douglas Calder.

On Thursday 1 October 2026, museum staff attended a ceremonial unveiling of a new centrepiece for the Corps Memorial at the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens (formerly the National Memorial Arboretum), Staffordshire.

The event took place on the 84th anniversary of the official formation of Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - REME and was attended by serving members and veterans of the Corps, representatives from the REME Museum, The REME Charity and REME Association, as well as the Corps’ Colonel-in-Chief, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh.

The REME Museum Model Show is back this weekend on Saturday 10 October! Here's a few reminders if you're thinking about coming along:

Tickets are still available - you can purchase on the door but booking in advance speeds up arrival and offers you a chance to guarantee a parking space 🎟️

Parking must be reserved in advance - check whether you have booked free parking with your entry tickets and be ready to give your information at the gate. Blue Badge spaces are available. All parking is first-come-first served, specific spaces cannot be reserved 🅿️

Crowns Café will be offering a special event menu and opens at 9:30 should you wish to join us for breakfast before the event starts 🍽️

Bring cash if you want to purchase anything from trader stalls, as we cannot guarantee all will be able to take card payments 💸

It’s World Animal Day! We’re looking at a few of the connections between REME and animals:

🐎 REME’s original headquarters at the Arborfield Garrison were once the site of a Remount Depot, 1904-37. During World War 1 the British Army had facilities that stored and trained horses and mules for battle. 1000s of horses passed through Arborfield’s gates on the way to, or back from, theatres of War. Later HQ REME Training Establishment was set up at the Arborfield Garrison along with a museum.

🐈 Chief mousers have been adopted by workshops and units - Tyson the Battle Cat was a three-legged cat in the Falklands during the 80s, adopted by soldiers due to his speed and skill catching mice.

🐢 Units have also adopted more obscure animals as mascots - Sergeant Tort and Lotty (aka Mrs Tort) were tortoises that became part of 52 Command Workshop, Aden. In Craftsman Magazine articles they have also been referred to as Fred and Freda. Sgt Tort was described as having his rank go up and down ‘like a yo-yo’ - though promoted over time, his ranks were stripped whenever he left his compound! The pair are pictured here with CSM W J Pratt and Mr Daniel Huggins, 1966.

1 October 1942 - the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) was officially formed!

Before, maintenance and repair of equipment was the responsibility of the arms and services that used it most. However, the system couldn't support the massive scale or complexity of equipment in use during WW2.

REME’s mission was to rationalise and improve the efficiency of the Army’s repair resources - this major re-organisation took place in two phases.

On 1 October 1942, the first REME personnel were transferred in from an existing branch of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC), technical tradesmen from the Royal Engineers (RE) and Royal Army Service Corps (RASC), as well as individuals from other Corps.

Phase 2 would take place after the war in 1949, with nearly 10,000 officers and men transferred in.
