Although sadly the Gamle Oksoey was unable to dock at Lowestoft, on Sunday 21 June our volunteer Alan made the trip to Great Yarmouth and had a very interesting visit on board.

The crew were disappointed that they had to divert to Yarmouth rather than Lowestoft and Alan was made very welcome when he went onboard. He met Espen Froysland who is the leader of the Board of European Route of Lighthouses and his office is at Lindesnes Lighthouse Museum. Erik Omland is not only a volunteer member of the crew but also one of the lighthouse keepers on the only unmanned lighthouse in Norway. He was so pleased that he can put that on his CV. He started the voyage of the Gamle then had to go and do his duty at Lindesnes Lighthouse, because it’s a museum and open to the general public, and then rejoined the Gamle a few days ago.

Alan also met met Joy and Patrick Tubby from Happisburgh Lighthouse Trust and Association of Lighthouse Keepers. They helped organise the Gamle visit and have so much knowledge of lighthouses, both in the UK and Europe.

Alan enquired why the Gamle Oksoey is described as a Tanker on The Ship Tracker App and was informed that it was her role when she was a working ship. She would deliver fuel, oil and paraffin and stores to Norwegian lighthouses. The hope is to get her reregistered as a cargo ship soon. When sailing around Northern European waters in the present world climate they have to prove they are not smuggling oil!! They still have the storage tanks but they have been filled with concrete to act as ballast.

Alan in turn told them about the lighthouse information both high and low light and our old Lowestoft Lighthouse mechanical drive unit that we have in our museum.

It was a moody midsummer morning today at Ness Point scanning the sea hoping to catch sight of the Gamle Oksøy on her way to Great Yarmouth having been unable to moor at Lowestoft. Is that vessel on the horizon her? 👀
