With ‘Mammoth’ now on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, we look back to ‘Nick Cave: Power Cycles’, the artist’s first exhibition in London in 2023 at Holtermann Fine Art.

Historically, a tondo describes a circular painting, carved relief or modelled plaque. Instead of the traditional mother and child image found in many Italian tondos, Nick Cave’s ‘Tondo’ incorporates weather patterns shaped by climate change and brain scans of children in communities affected by gun violence. It becomes a powerful visual and thermal image of Mother Earth and youth, both combined in damaged and turbulent states.

To celebrate Nick Cave’s new commission ‘Mammoth’ at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, we revisit his work ‘Chain Reaction’, presented in 2023 as part of ‘Nick Cave: Power & Cycles’, the artist’s () first exhibition in London at Holtermann Fine Art.

The four-metre-tall, multipartite sculpture comprises 15 suspended chains – resin casts of interlocking arms and wrists taken from the artist’s own body – hung in concentric circles within the gallery space.

This is great news - so well deserved!

“The and the Sam Gilliam Foundation have announced photographer Deana Lawson and sculptor .ndife as the Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program 2026 Residents.

Now in its second year, the program furthers the legacy of artist Sam Gilliam, who made civic engagement and education through art a fundamental part of his groundbreaking career and practice. Lawson and Ndife will conduct research, engage local community members, and develop new work to be presented through a series of exhibitions and public programs at the museum, fostering creative dialogue with the broader Louisville community.”

At Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC:
Nick Cave ‘Mammoth’, open through 2026

Its title an evocation of extinction, yet the show is an ode to LIFE. A triumph that has been some ten years in the making – congratulations to Nick Cave and Bob Faust!
