IN THE WORLD: Artists and Projects

Peter Buggenhout’s unique and compelling oeuvre consists of autonomous, seemingly disparate groups of sculptural objects. Resisting interpretation and devoid of symbols, the works engage the viewer in a dialogue on our inability to comprehend the complexity of the world.

Curated by Dries van Noten and Geert Bruloot the mysterious works come into their own in the exhibition ‘The only true protest is beauty’ at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, newly opened by Fondazione Dries Van Noten.

Open till 4th October - Recommended!

IN THE WORLD: Artists and Projects

Congratulations to Nick Cave:

At the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center on 22nd June Cave presented a vibrant campus-wide “procession of joy”, featuring his iconic Soundsuits alongside the Kenwood Academy High School Marching Band drumline.

His permanent 45-foot (14meter) collaborative lobby installation with Marie Watt titled “This Land, Shared Sky” opened at the same time.

So impressive!

IN THE WORLD: Artists and Projects

Cragg’s oeuvre is fundamentally informed by nature so seeing his sculpture arising in the landscape is a wonderfully satisfying experience.

Ahmed Umar speaks about his current exhibition ‘Glowing Phalanges’, on view until 1st August.

In this film, Umar reflects on the inspiration behind ‘Glowing Phalanges’, drawing on his experience of growing up between two Islamic traditions: Wahhabism in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where he was raised, and Sufism in Sudan, where he was born.

“‘Glowing Phalanges’, the title of Umar’s exhibition, is a direct and declaratory reference to this idea. The works, which he says were made ‘as a way of thinking about my family,’ directly confront such Wahhabi thinking. They are material objects (‘amulets’ as he calls them, ‘that hold a certain power’), while at the same time standing as the artist’s personal interpretations of prayer, serving as homages and celebrations of his own Sufi roots and ancestors.” - Jon Wood
