You are warmly invited to the monthly project meeting on Thursday 3rd September at 11am, which is a collaboration between the Severndroog Castle Trust and the University of Hertfordshire aiming to reinterpret the Castle’s history, catalogue existing materials, and explore its meaning as a 21st-century community heritage site.

Free entry no need to book, just turn up
(however you can confirm your attendance if you prefer by booking a free ticket)
https://severndroogcastle.org.uk/whats-on/

In the Courtyard (weather permitting)/Tearoom

On First Thursday of the month at 11am

The meeting will be an informal discussion, including:
Updates on new research/objects
Bring your stories, photos and memories of the castle
Offer your services to research areas of interest or to help collect community stories via story gathering
Discussion of the site and its interpretation
Ideas on the Castle's story

As the project develops, activities will include:
· Informal talks and guided discussions
· Community story-gathering
· Opportunities to work with historic materials, photographs and archives
· Collaborative development of new interpretation for the site

We are particularly interested in uncovering stories that are not yet widely recorded – helping to bring together personal, local and global perspectives and will soon be lunching an Oral history collection activity

The Project is intended to be community-led, with academic support for workshops and research skills.

· Share memories, stories or family connections linked to the Castle or the local area
· Explore historical themes, including the Castle’s links to global trade and empire
· Contribute ideas for how the Castle’s story is told in the future
· Get involved in research, archives and interpretation
No experience is needed – just curiosity and an interest in history.

PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE We have no more availability for solar eclipse viewing from our roof on Wednesday 12th August. The event is for advance ticket holders only; sorry there is not going to be any walk-up availability on the evening.

Our Tea Room will be open on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm during the eclipse for visitors to the woods and for ticket holders. Drop in for a drink, cake or an ice cream whether you are visiting the roof or out in the woods, but please don’t take food or drink upstairs.

If you’ve been lucky enough to get a ticket for the roof, please note times are not transferable and you will only be admitted at the start of your time-slot. It’s going to be an extremely busy evening for our volunteer team, so please work with us by arriving at least ten minutes early, ready to go up to the roof, and return your safe-viewing glasses promptly at the end of your visit.

As custodians of one of London’s very highest places we are so excited to be part of the partial solar eclipse viewing, and we can’t wait to welcome you to Severndroog for this special evening. While you are viewing the eclipse, stay safe and only look at the sun or photograph the sun with suitable equipment.

If you’ve missed out on tickets this time, we are sorry about that - but do check out our website for other opportunities to take in the breathtaking views from the Severndroog Castle roof.

We’ve had a few queries from concerned visitors about the cracks in the Castle, and the Severndroog Trust wanted to update you.

The cracks in the building have been monitored now for about a year and a half by structural engineers appointed by the Trust’s insurers. Monitoring confirms there has been movement in the building, but the engineers have not yet isolated the cause. Further investigations are being planned for the coming months, and we expect monitoring to continue for some months to come.

The Trust has not yet been advised on what the final remedial works to safeguard the building are likely to be.

We have been reassured by the structural engineer that the building is safe to open to the public and for people to be in the building while investigations continue. The Castle will remain open as usual until the Trust receives further advice on the necessary remedial works.

The Trust will publish updates as it receives them, so you’ll see any updates here and on our website.
