LOOP Artists: Artists in Print

LOOP Artists: Artists in Print LOOP is an informal co-operative of artists with a background in printmaking. LOOP 2024 will be the nineteenth LOOP show since 2005.

The first LOOP show was in October 2005 at the Menier Gallery. It brought together 12 artist printmakers who had recently completed the Camberwell MA printmaking course. The show was organised and mounted collaboratively, and showed painting and a wide range of printmaking. It sold work, encouraging a second show at the Menier in November 2006. Someone from Bankside Gallery dropped by and asked if

we had considered showing at Bankside. The austere headquarters of the RE and RWS? We hadn't - but it was worth asking, and so our first Bankside show came about in 2007. 'Loop' had become LOOP, and was set to continue. There's been at least one show a year for 18 years in various galleries, but its main gallery is the loopartists.org.uk website. It still is a collaborative show. All decisions are made by the artists, who do all the work involved, from publicity and catering to making the sales, and who make up their own minds what work they will show. The shows have looped individual artists together, and to the public who want to see, and possibly buy the work. Some have exhibited internationally, set up print studios, or pursued teaching careers, while others have continued to work quietly in their own studios, or have recently completed a printmaking MA. The focus has always been on print, but this is not a requirement, as artists are free to show their most recent work in whatever media they are using. The variety and vitality of contemporary print has been evident in all LOOP exhibitions. Tuesday 10th September - Sunday 15th September

Closing Party: 3pm – 6pm, Sunday 15th September

Julie Hoyle is a printmaker and mixed-media artist whose work explores kinship in our living world. In Breath and Blood, human and bonobo figures reflect the physical structures and vulnerabilities we share across species.

For LOOP 2026 LOOP_artists Julie is developing this idea further in a new group of works, The Companions, growing from conversations with artists about animals they feel connected to. Figures, creatures and woodland come together as equal protagonists in the storytelling.

✨Artist update: Ralph Overill aka Ralph Overill. Ralph has shown with LOOP for many years. You may remember him serving drinks as a cyber man! Now based in Glasgow, his work this year includes photo etching and layered screenprint. Swipe to the end to see his shaped zinc photo etching plate. ✨Artist Update: Maki Takizawa. Long term LOOP Artist and our website designer has been making new work for LOOP 2026. She says: “My practice is rooted in a broader fascination with natural phenomena
and with consciousness — the subconscious in particular. Consciousness
itself is intangible, without physical form, yet it undeniably exists
within us, something we recognize and understand from the inside.
Within that fascination, how I approach emotion and inner experience
has shifted, subtly, from year to year.

This current body of work focuses on fleeting, momentary emotions —
feelings that resist being put into words. They constantly shift shape
and defy easy explanation, and yet they persist; they never fade. It
is this quality — nameless, yet undeniably present — that I’m
exploring through these pieces.

Rather than returning to the same technique for each piece, I
deliberately shift my method and visual approach, approaching this
question through different doors. Printmaking, as a field, holds
particular appeal because it isn’t bound to a single technique — it
allows free movement between multiple techniques. Technical mastery is
a constant demand, but controlling that complexity is itself where
much of my creative joy lies; it is not merely a means to an end, but
part of the work itself.
