SHOEN KAI - Annual exhibition of Calligraphy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ueno Park, Tokyo

Congratulations to my friend Iccho Hama-san for winning this years first prize 🥇.

‘’Japanese Calligraphy, known as ‘Shado’, is more than a method of writing - it’s a harmonious balance between mind, body and spirit. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, calligraphy transforms the simple act of writing into a dynamic visual and emotional experience. Each stroke is an expression of intent, discipline and the calligrapher’s intent’’ (SK).

Amazing to see this huge collection of work, exhibited in the impressive halls of these esteemed national art gallery. The diversity, intensity, skill and expression of the Kanji is profound.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE  (1963)
MAURICE SENDAK

Do you remember this one? The Wild Things that so many of is grew uo with - that wonderful book that help forge  many a childhood dream and caper, and has inspired writers and artists ever since. It was a favourite of mine - and still is.

We are so very fortunate to have innour collection two editions from the increasingly rare boxed set that Harper and Row issued, with Sendak, in 1971. A limited run of these elegant sets were issued, not particularly as a commercial enterprise, but have now acquired cult status.

All the more special is that these are signed by Sendak - a true rarity indeed.

They can be viewed by appointment and on our website at www.artofthebook.co.uk. Our link is in the bio.

BOLOGNA FAIR 2026
TAYLOR DOLAN
ILLUSTRATORS VIRTUAL WALL

Great to see Taylor representing Ireland as one of three illustrators featured on this year’s Virtual Wall.

Showing some of the best established and emerging talent from the world over, the virtual wall is a feast of illustrative talent, showing only too clearly that illustrative work is as stong as ever in an expanding, even explosive field of artistic endeavour.

Take a stroll walking along this wall - you won’t regret it.

‘Summer Dreaming’ by Benedict Blathwayt
Recently sold.

A beautifully crafted watercolour by Ben sums up his wonderful imagination, with this dreamy and slightly surreal depiction of the essence of simmer days we all love so much. Jumping fish swirl into flocks of birds, as the farmer harvests golden corn, as the animals in the silver birch woods look on.

Drawing in his life as a dairyman, National Trust artist and farmer living in the depths of the British countryside, it is interesting to note that this watercolour displays all of the characters in his books; Pebble, Skip and Bramble amongst others. All that is missing is his much-loved Little Red Train.

Having exhibited Ben’s artwork for over thirty years now, I enjoy staring at them now as much as I did when I first saw them.

❤️

Benedict Blathwayt - Just sold.

A rare signed first edition copy of this early copy of the endearing ‘Bruno’s Band’ by the wonderful Benedict Blathwayt. A lifetime of rural living influenced his artwork, showing an idyllic bucolic existence sadly under thret in this increasingly electronic modern world.

We have a selection of Ben’s original artwork in our current catalogue, at www.artofthebook.co.uk. See our link in the bio.
