Join us on 28th November for a panel discussion in company with the contributors to our ongoing exhibition Small Spaces in the City: Rethinking Inside the Box, curated by
With micro-apartments becoming an escalating trend and need, the discussion will ask what can we learn from other cities where small is the norm? Are developers exploiting an out-of-control market? Is tiny living threatening the physical and mental health of both young and old, and many ages in between?
Speakers include:
Phil Hubbard, British geographer and Professor of Urban Studies at King’s College London
Anna Parker, architect and founder of Intervention Architecture in Birmingham
Kristoffer Roxbergh of White Arkitekter in Stockholm
Jean-Christophe Petillault, founder of JCPCDR Architecture, Paris, and Scenographer for the exhibition
The discussion will be moderated by the London-based journalist and editor-at-large for Dezeen, Amy Frearson, co-author of the 2021 RIBA publication All Together Now: The co-living and co-working revolution.
Doors will open at 18:30 and the talk will start around 19:00.
AJ x Roca | Can Building with Timber Save the Planet?
We are pleased to announce our next event in collaboration with the Architects Journal on the 9th November 2023, featuring Built by Nature's Joe Giddings in conversation with AJ Sustainability Editor Hattie Hartman.
Architect and ACAN co-founder Joe Giddings is UK Networks lead for Amsterdam-based Built by Nature, a grant-funding organisation dedicated to promoting greater use of timber and other bio-based materials in the built environment.
Previously project director of the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products’ Timber Accelerator Hub, Joe is on the forefront of timber innovation, exploring how to unlock the insurance, fire and other barriers which hinder wider adoption across the industry. Joe will explain why we should build with timber and how best we should go about this, while shedding light on current misconceptions about the material. He will also provide an overview of the recently released New Model Building and share insights from Built by Nature’s current work streams, as well as pioneering projects in the pipeline.

Our current “Vanishing Points: Architectural Imagination in the Digital Universe”, curated by Hamza Shaikh in collaboration with Drawing Matter, looks at architectural drawings across time.
Among other works by influential figures in architecture, Frank Gehry’s drawing on a food-stained napkin attracts attention with its story. According to Drawing Matter, Julia Bloomfield recalls a dinner with Frank Gehry at a Chinese restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, where he drew a project, he was working on in Seoul (which we are still trying to identify) onto a napkin. In an email to Drawing Matter, Julia writes ‘I seem to remember that he thought that the project would not be built’.
Napkin sketching is a common elemental expression of thought in architecture. Napkins often become the earliest evidence of the process allowing architects to capture a spur-of-the-moment idea.
Don't miss the chance to view this and other amazing drawings at Roca London Gallery.

Head to our website (link in bio) to learn more about the topic of this month , which is “Reimagining the city”.
bit.ly/3iCHjoD
With the eruption of the pandemia in 2020, we saw how quickly cities across the globe stepped up to the challenge of adapting their spaces to facilitate urban life in spite of the unexpected limitations. We witnessed numerous experiments that accelerated a collective interest in how we can reimagine our cities. Now almost three years on, with climate change as the overwhelming issue that we continue to face, we have a renewed understanding of the city as the scenario for new spatial relationships that are designed to respond to emerging considerations for diverse, flexible and sustainable urban environments.

Это футуристичное здание в Лондоне - Roca London Gallery, спроектированное всемирно известной Захой Хадид (ZAHA HADID Roca London Gallery).
Teens Product Design Camp.
