Tannery Arts is a small, independent charity concerned with making contemporary art accessible to a wide public and supports the professional development of emerging and established artists through affordable studio provision. Tannery Projects is an occasional exhibition and events space run by and for Tannery Arts artist studio holders. Tannery Arts is also home to the Drawing Room gallery, which

delivers the exhibition and learning strands of Tannery Arts' public engagement programme. Drawing Room explores ideas around contemporary drawing and makes them visible in the public domain.

For our next Tannery Project Display we are welcoming Shumaiya Khan Shumaiya Khan with ‘Three Wise Women’.

Originally three stand alone panels which uncannily came together. Loosely based on the tale of the three wise men, with a reimagining through matriarchal lineage and action. Each panel is bodily height/width, unraveling an illustrated, mythic resemblance of the physical internal body. Growing or giving birth to another body.

Shumaiya Khan, b 1990. My practice explores the connection between all organic beings metaphysical bodies with the physical state. I investigate this via reoccurring instinctual forms within my paintings and sculptures, often received via symbiotic and somatic release. My practice is both research and physical, hands-on process. References can mirror human bodies and flesh, including veins and muscular systems, as well as hidden or concealed elemental surfaces and landscapes found in the inner depths of forests, caves, and quarries. There’s a quality of meeting or embodying entities, as works are often bodily shaped and height. Forms and environment which appear grow, erode or age.

We are thrilled to announce a new display as part of our Tannery Projects!

„The Party Never Stops” delves deeper into my exploration of spatial perception. This work immerses the viewer in a dynamic party scene, centering on a couple on the dance floor, creating their own space in a busy environment. We are able to manipulate spaces through our body language, and by doing so, can change the narrative of a setting. I’ve chosen to reimagine this environment through a romantic lens, depicting the couple with such intimacy that they merge into a single entity

John Lloyd John Lloyd is a London-based painter working primarily in oil on canvas and mixed media. His practice begins with black-and-white archival photography from the 1950s and 1960s, which serves as a starting point for exploring colour, memory, and perception. Working initially without colour allows Lloyd to experiment freely with palette, using colour to shift mood and meaning rather than simply describe reality. Selected images are digitally manipulated in Photoshop, removed from their original context, and then translated into layered paintings.

Lucid Dreaming by Maria Teresa Ortoleva MariaTeresa Ortoleva is an installation of drawings printed on unique silk satin banners. It explores the idea that drawing is a form of Lucid Dreaming, between dream and self-consciousness, annotating, mapping, digesting and developing thoughts of the imagination in real time as they happen within the mind, by using mark making, diagrams, borrowed and made up symbols, geometric and organic structures and anatomies.

Maria Teresa Ortoleva is a London-based Italian artist and a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art. She is represented in Milan by Luca Tommasi gallery, and she is currently funded by UKRI as a PhD researcher in data sculpture/physicalization, in the Human-Centred Computing group at King’s College London.

We are pleased to announce the artists selected for the Shared Space Residency Programme!

The artists get the access to one of our Tannery Arts studio spaces where they can develop their creative practice. They will also work alongside Drawing Room team to develop variety of community-based initiatives.

Rain Pipe is a new vitrine display outside of Drawing Room by Kate Burling (Kate Burling) who is one of our Tannery Artists.

Kate Burling (b.1998, Reading) lives and works in South East London. Her iridescent finger-paintings are places of rumination, where she attempts to catch elusive ideas and map them in soft, organic space. They help her to pay attention to reticent wants and thoughts which bring themselves to the surface through repetitive imagery, and allow for quiet communication with shy spectators.
