PAUL FREUD | NO LIFE WITHOUT DEATH

Cole-Levi Klimt was proud to present works by Paul Freud as part of No Life Without Death.

The grandson of Lucian Freud and great-grandson of Sigmund Freud, Paul Freud has forged a distinctive artistic voice that confronts the complexities of the human condition with remarkable honesty. His paintings explore memory, morality, identity and the psychological weight of contemporary life.

Featured in the exhibition is work from his powerful Genocide Series—a body of paintings that responds to the devastating realities of war, displacement and human suffering. Rather than documenting specific events, the series asks us to reflect on our shared humanity and the consequences of hatred, violence and indifference.

Within No Life Without Death, Freud’s work becomes a poignant reminder that art can bear witness to history while creating space for empathy, reflection and dialogue. His paintings challenge us not only to look, but to truly see.

A semi-decomposed albatross washes a shore and is entirely unsure of why he is there, when he arrived and what it was that he was supposed to be doing!

In this piece the audience will see an apparently dormant creature suddenly come to life as his neck rolls slowly upright from its resting position and he begins to speak. Embodying the persona of a doddering English gentleman he discusses a plethora of nonsensical concerns touching on such things as time spent, appointments missed, routines confused and plans delayed. His beak clacks open and shut as he speaks and, in his excitement, he gestures grandly with his disintegrating wings.

As the albatross conveys his thoughts and plans for the future he appears entirely unaware that his life is spent and his body is being returned to the earth. He is stuck in a loop of unacceptance, unable to confront his fate and make peace with his circumstances. This piece speaks to a multitude of universal anxieties.

Charlotte Worthington is a London based artist who  graduated from the Royal College of Art (MA Painting, 2024). Before returning to painting, she worked for several years in the TV industry as an animator and a documentary producer/director. 

Her work explores the emotional and psychological spaces of the domestic and the familiar. Through painting, textiles, metal, stuffing and stitching, she pieces together fragmented narratives drawn from personal memory and recurring experiences. She works intuitively, connecting images to create hangings, soft sculptures and wall-based work, transforming the feminised languages of the domestic into sites of pressure and rupture.The domestic is not a place of comfort. It is a space of loss, accumulation and concealment. 

Drawing on her background in animation and documentary, her accumulative compositions function as material edits—collapsed timelines in which memory, control and claustrophobia are embedded within the fabric of the image.

A female figure holding a baby , drawn in black ink on momigami paper, is cut out and sewn onto navy velvet. Behind her, painted silk with 24 ct gold leaf suggests a second skin or interior state.

Momigami is a soft, crumpled Japanese paper that holds ink directly and has a quality close to fabric. The materials — paper, velvet, silk, thread — are all associated with the domestic and the feminine. I use them not decoratively but as materials that carry weight and meaning.

Animal 2 is part of an ongoing series . Each piece starts as a drawing and is worked into an aluminium sheet by hand — pressed from front and back until figures emerge in relief.

A girl sits beneath a pair of feet. The relationship between them is not explained. The series treats the human experience as its subject — instinct, vulnerability, exposure — and this piece is one panel in an ongoing body of work.

Step into the powerful and thought-provoking work of Orly Kritzman, whose two sculptures form part of No Life Without Death.

Up In Smoke explores the transformation of the pomegranate — an ancient symbol of fertility, abundance and generosity — into the form of a hand gr***de. Drawing on 9th-century sphero-conical vessels, the work confronts the devastating shift from creation to destruction, questioning how symbols of hope become instruments of violence.

Words Fail Me, from The Book of Lilith series, reflects on silence, censorship and resilience. Layers of obscured and redacted text invite us to consider not only what is spoken, but what is deliberately left unsaid. Constructed from porcelain, paper porcelain, cloth and paper, the sculpture is repeatedly broken and repaired, carrying visible scars that become symbols of survival rather than weakness.

Kritzman’s practice brings together the personal and the political through clay, text and material intervention. Working with objects embedded in cultural and geopolitical histories, she transforms them into powerful narratives of identity, displacement, memory and resilience. Her works embody what she describes as a form of future archaeology—where every fracture, repair and surface records the traces of human experience.

In a world marked by conflict and division, Orly Kritzman’s work reminds us that fragility and strength can exist together, and that even in silence, powerful stories endure.

We are proud to be collaborating with Ricardo Fernandes and Ana Luiza Rodrigues on this wonderful artwork "Crossfire".

Crossfire -  It's a powerful sculpture with a polished concrete base, like a pedestal, and a cry of conscience to humanity for the liberation of differences and mutual respect.

Crossfire, 2022, veils itself in intricate layers of symbolism, daring the observer to unravel concealed narratives amidst a tapestry rich with socio-political discord. This work is being shown as a collaboration with Ricardo Fernandes gallery.

Ana Luiza Rodrigues: “In her work, Ana Luiza Rodrigues chooses familiar and easily recognisable objects and strips them of their primordial function and denies their essential beauty while allowing then to keep their ability to emotionally connect.

She then promotes an implausible encounter that seams surreal, since we can’t find logic in our minds. Cruel, because they struggle to exist side by side and we feel it would be better to separate them to end the tension.

Also captivating, once you realize that in fact, you are the one being asked to strip yourself from previous perceptions and the values to enable a connection with your primordial emotions.

These objects are not only shown together but they are physically entangled and, despite us, their connection grows. From their dissonance emerges a new sonority that evolves. Consequently, like a pair of ballet dancers, they flow.”

From the Genocide Series

The Genocide Series is an ongoing body of work by Paul Freud that examines the devastating human consequences of war, political violence and forced displacement. Comprising seven paintings, the series shifts attention away from the spectacle of conflict and towards the intimate psychological experiences of those who endure it, using portraiture to explore grief, vulnerability and survival. (

Inspired by contemporary humanitarian crises and global political unrest, Freud’s paintings reject propaganda and ideology in favour of empathy. Through fragmented bodies, skeletal forms and emotionally charged compositions, the series confronts the fragility of human existence while asking viewers to reflect on the universal cost of conflict beyond headlines and statistics.

Working across painting, drawing and sculpture, Freud’s multidisciplinary practice investigates memory, trauma and the complexities of the human condition. The Genocide Series continues this exploration, standing as both an act of witness and a meditation on compassion, resilience and our shared humanity in times of unimaginable loss.

WE ARE LIVE. 🖤

What a fantastic soft preview of No Life Without Death at The Lightbox Museum. It has been an incredible day seeing the exhibition come to life and witnessing the conversations and emotions the works have already inspired. Life comes with death, we witness grief and it narrows us as human if we let it control our lives.

We find hope in grief and sorrow in happiness. No Life Without Death show us that even in lifes most vulnerable times, we can experince happiness. And in lifes happiest times we can experience sadness.

Curated by Chelsey Chase the exhibition brings together works by our represented artists Paul Freud, Meryl Donoghue and Eva Yates, alongside special guest artists Ana Luiza Rodrigues, Orly Kritzman and Charlotte Worthington.

We are so excited to officially celebrate the exhibition at our Private View this Saturday, 20th June, and cannot wait to welcome collectors, artists, friends and supporters for an unforgettable afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project and joined us today. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.

🖤 INSTALLATION DAY 🖤

The walls are no longer empty. Each artwork is finding its place, each conversation is beginning, and No Life Without Death is slowly coming to life.

Over the next two days, the gallery will transform into a space for reflection on mortality, memory, transformation and the fragile beauty of existence. Through painting, sculpture, photography and installation, the exhibition invites us to consider that there can be no life without death—and no growth without change.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the Preview on Wednesday, where you’ll be among the first to experience the exhibition before it opens to the public.

Thank you to all of the artists, installers and everyone working behind the scenes to bring this vision together.
