🐟 From the lecture theatre to the fish market – and out to sea.
Marine biology student Anya Leslie has spent the summer getting hands-on experience of fisheries science as the first recipient of the Dr Ian Napier Studentship.
The University of Glasgow student spent eight weeks with UHI Shetland, with her placement taking her from sampling at Lerwick Fish Market and measuring scallops to creel fishing, dolphin surveys, seagrass restoration and the annual Shetland Inshore Fish Survey.
Anya said: “I could not have asked for a better experience over the summer. It has opened my eyes to the areas I’m most interested in.”
Created by Shetland Fishermen’s Association and UHI Shetland in memory of the late Dr Ian Napier, the studentship aims to give the next generation of marine scientists invaluable practical experience and strengthen the links between science and the fishing industry.

"It’s incredibly peaceful – you almost always have the water to yourself, with no crowds. At times, the visibility can be unbelievable, and the biodiversity is remarkable..."

We ask Billy Arthur, an underwater photographer living on the Shetland Islands about his extraordinary images of the marine environment.
